Opinions needed, has this holder been tampered with?

I picked up a card for my Yount collection in early July and finally received the card today. The seller mailed out the card on the same day I filed a dispute, but that's a different story for a different day. When I received the card today, I noticed a fair amount of snow on the edges of the holder, so I am a little suspicious. The bottom edge of the holder is also very rough where the two pieces of the slab are bonded. I've added scans and am hoping to get a few opinions here. I showed the card to brianwintersfan this evening and he gave me his opinion, but also suggested that I pass it by everyone here to get a few more.

Here is the scan from the auction:

Here are closeups of the small amount of snow on the left and right edges:

Here's the bottom:

Lastly, here's my best shot at scanning the bottom edge to try to show how rough it is:

The card, itself, looks 10ish but I am having a tough time getting past the snow. Am I overreacting? Could this have happened when it was being slabbed? Any opinions would be appreciated.

    Gumbyfan,

Looks to me like the slab has been tampered with. Good luck to you.

    If it's questionable, walk away.

    No way

  • I would just pay the $5.00 to have it re-slabbed and then you'll know for sure. The slab sure looks suspect, but then again the card looks like a 10.

    Suspect.

Shoot it out to PSA and let them decide.

I don't like the L/R centering. I would not buy a "10" that was not perfect.

  • I would say it is the same card in both scans, based on centering and the little dot above the R in brewers.

Thanks guys. I had a feeling that was going to be the response and that's what my gut was telling me as well. I will be sending it in to PSA to take a look.

I agree that it is the same card from the auction scan, as I had compared the white dot above the R in Brewers as well. My concern is that if the card has been switched out, it could have been switched out prior to scanning for ebay. That print dot, that I admittedly missed when I bid on the card, along with the centering makes me a bit surprised that it would be a 10. Then again, both are minor issues that I could get past since the card has overall good eye appeal.

Edited to add...what's to stop the submitter from cracking out the real 10 and putting in one of those 9's from the same submission?

Even if they say it's authentic, I would personally still spend the $5.00 to have it re-slabbed just to make it look more presentable and to remove any future suspicion to another buyer should you ever decide to sell it.

Absolutely! As it is, I don't think it's presentable at all. Hopefully that's all it is.

  • Looks fine to me - the holder would be WAY more frosted if the card was swapped

looks okay to me but probably worth the $5 to put your mind at ease

I've never cracked a slab to know what it looks like (how frosted it gets), but that bottom edge sure bothers me. They look like pry marks. The guy obviously has multiple 1976 Younts, so a swap isn't a stretch. I hope that's not the case...

    Gumby,
I've submitted a ton of cards to psa over the years. The holder, while not looking perfect, I'm sure is fine. Occasionaly I think PSA gets a batch of holders in, that aren't quite minty looking, like your sharp Yount card.

In fact at the National on Wednesday, I had eight cards reholdered and a couple of them had the same look to the edge of the holder. They were a little scratched up like on your Yount card. So I think you're okay.

Also, just look at the card itself. Does it look like a 10 to you? If yes, forget about it. If not, have PSA look it over, get it reholdered, etc.. .

  • I am not sure what the seller would gain by swapping out a 9 with a 10. It is not a major dollar card.

He would still need to re-submit the raw card again and get it in a 10 holder to make his money back which is far from a sure thing as a 10 one day may be a 9 the next day. Probably just a holder with bad quality control.

  • Possible tampering but probably not a successful switch.

Nevertheless, you should quit the hobby immediately. image

I think it's ok too, but you might as well get it reholdered just to be sure.

    PSA 9 average last 5 sales = $29.22
    PSA 10 average last 5 sales = $358.96

Not a major dollar card, but still worth a swap if you're shady.
