Forgive me father, for I have sinned.

I cracked out a coin from a rattler holder today. A gorgeous draped bust 1795 dollar. Beautifully original with stunningly attractive surfaces. Was graded F12---a no doubt F15 nowadays with a solid shot at 20. She's at NGC right now for a show grade with a couple other beauties.

I might have tried to cross that first before I cracked it. Man, I thought I had balls. Good luck!

Taking chances is one thing, but imo, this is like jumping out of an airplane at 100 feet and hoping that you don't get hurt is another. I have never cracked a coin out of a slab and never will.

Sounds like you confessed to two sins. image

That is a true sin and the fault of being a dealer. I like to keep my coins in the rattler holders. I really do prefer this holder over the newer ones.

Of course when it comes time to sell they will have to be upgraded. Assuming of course they are worthy. image

I bet you could have just gotten 20 money for it in the original holder... personally I don't buy pre 1838 NGC graded coins.

i tend to agree with Broadstruck's comment about getting ++ $$ for it still in the PCGS holder (although i'm not sure why the <seemingly> arbitrary date of 1838 popped up; maybe he will explain)

and Will, you are planning on sending in the label to keep the pops true, right?

I think he really meant to say Pre 1839. image

This I dont agree with, but it is true that you could have sold it between a F15 and VF 20 price if it is what you say it is.

Yes Oops 1839... as anything prior to that IMHO NGC is very weak on. All Flowing hair 50c and $1, Draped Bust 1/2c - $1, and there's total trash in most of the Capped Bust Quarter holders. So if your coin was on a table at a show and I was scanning your goods, I'd 95% of the time skip this $1. image

Edited to say: Yes that's how I really feel, and sorry I didn't Sugar Coat anything! image

It could be an XF40 coin in a F12 slab and I think you'd have trouble finding any dealer on the boarse floor that will offer you more than F12 money for it.

I would have had to leave it in the rattler but best of luck with the grade.

just goes to show people are beholden to the plastic more then the coin.. as a majority.
it is all becoming quite clear why even crap gets submitted now days. from 15 dollar coins
    to junk silver.

but it makes them happy!! :-P

i would have left it in the slab and sold it for f15 money if the coin was all there. giving more
money to ngc and probably pcgs is just silly when it was already graded in the first place
    to a sane standard.

The rattler holder would of added a premium. IMO. I would of left her entombed.

  • Results back.

Show grading was pretty tight. I didn't make any huge upgrades but still made out decent on the coin. Including grading fees I made only about 10%, but not bad for a wholesale deal. The piece is sold now though, and I didn't get a chance to photograph it.

For those of you wondering... the rattle rholder was a piece of junk--fairly heavily scuffed and covered with sticker residue. The coin inside rattled an uncomfortable amount... there was probably about a full millimeter of free space.
