Is this corrosion on copper?

Whatever it is will a soak help/harm it?
I want to submit it for grading and wonder if it
will be knocked down for the spots?

Any suggestions?

NGC wouldnt slab it in my opinion......the current climate is very sensitive on surfaces

I agree. Its active. I dont think a soak in anything will help its chances of slabbing.

maybe bb for envromental damage? bullet holes?

mineral oil and toothpick (use magnifyer and be gentle) before sending to any TPG though

i would say that appears to be something eating into the surface
of the coin and that is called corrosion. i am not sure it would slab
due to that.

i have never dipped a coin in my life so i do not know the answer
to conserving it. keep it out of humidity is probably the key to preserve
it in its current state.

I vote for a long soak in mineral oil and a little work with a toothpick.

Acetone soak first, warm water rinse, dry.. soak in mineral oil... use tip of 'wet' toothpick to gently nudge the corrosion... could be surface damage underneath... Good luck, Cheers, RickO

I would not use a toothpick, as RICKO is right. The Old Timer's trick is to use a rose thorn, but only if necessary.

How long should I soak it in mineral oil?

It sure looks active to me. I agree with some of the others. I would acetone first, let it dry and then soak in mineral oil.......2 weeks to start.

I would not use a tooth pick or a rose thorn..........after the minral oil soak I would use a clean q-tip (dry) and gently rol it across the worse places........... see if the q-tip picks up anything.

If yes but not all is gone.........................back in the minearl oil for 2 more weeks......

If no..............well I don't know about you Stef but I would cry
