using older stamps for postage

I inherited a litteral suitcase of sheets from the 1940s- 1970s of common US material. I've been using them as postage for domestic mail. This may be somewhat off topic but can I simply affix enough of this older postage to get a letter to France, or does sending a letter to France require an air mail stamp?

All that is required is the correct amount of postage. If you're using older stamps without tagging it might be best to ask for a hand cancel.
I think someone posted here a ways (way) back that the tagging started with the .06 cents so I should be good down to my $.08? Ring true?
