Eagle and Buffalo in Prosperity Set
'Border Bumps' From Die Breaks
Just as the 2008 Buffalo one-ounce and fractional gold coins were put on sale July 22, the U.S. Mint announced a special 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set also would be offered to collectors starting Aug. 1.
Price was not set by press time.
The set will feature two gold coins, one is an uncirculated 2008-W half-ounce Buffalo and the other is an uncirculated 2008-W half-ounce American Eagle.
This is the second issue in the Mint's Celebration series, which was launched in February. The Mint notes that the number "8" is traditionally associated with prosperity in Asia and the triple "8" date occurs just once every 100 years.
The set comes in a special hardwood box. Orders may be placed on the Web site at www.usmint.gov, or by telephone at (800) USA-MINT.

I actually think I would be more impressed if the struck a special coin to commemorate the occasion -

Does not mean a thing to me, nor most of the members of this board....
Move along, nothing to see here.....
The Mint could also start making colorized coins, gold plated coins, coins with NBA and NASCAR racing figures painted on them, and you could still say "you don't have to buy them"
The Mint should have a little more dignity.
So now they are looking at coins that they think might be popular over there, they are not selling colored coins or stuff like that like are neighbor to the north.....
It is the marketing department trying to make more money, what else is new about that.....
This special offer by the US Mint is most likely geared toward their Asian buyers. You know the main reason they went to the pure 24K buffalo was to entice other countries, namely Asian and Indian countries to buy our gold. To anyone but an American, it seems really stupid to buy an 18K to 22K "coin" when one can get .999 Fine gold from other nations.

<< <i>Triple - 8 date? This in and of itself is worth celebrating?

That's really not the issue.
There's another thread going right now about "Oath" dollars from the Denver Mint, or at least the Denver Mint shop.
They are slabbed by ANACS.
Am I really the only one who thinks the Mint has lost its way?
No, the Mint isn't making colored coins, yet. But there is a market for those too.
With satin finish, burnished uncirculated, reverse proof, it's only a matter of time.
<< <i>Of course, no one need buy these offerings...as far as the Mint goes.. the more it offers, the more customers it attracts... The mint has a business branch.. and it is profitable. Cheers, RickO >>
<< <i>PCGS said they were going to label the celebration buffalo and then changed their mind. >>
Wise move by PCGS. Too many BS labels could drag this hobby down.
If only the Mint showed equal discretion.
