serious question - how often do you find human (i guess anyway) hairs inside of slabs???

dorkkarldorkkarl Posts: 12,691 ✭✭✭
lord knows i've cracked out my share of coins (heh heh heh...), be that as it may, i have begun to notice a alarming trend of hairs inside of danged slabs. i assume they are human hairs.... anyone else noticing this problem?

this is not a slam, but a serious question. if you insist on keeping your coins inside the slabs, seems like having hair in there might not be too good for the coin.

    "Hair today, gone tomorrow!"

I've found this only once, unfortunately it was a long hair which went right across the obverse of the coin and was very noticeable.

Would you consider that a hairline image

At least you can run DNA and identify the guilty party.

Sometimes it even adds character to the coin:

No hairs yet, but NGC sent me back a set of 5 pandas with a couple of bits of plastic encapsulated with the coins AND spots on the coins from NCS's washing (to remove any trace amounts of PVC from the soft plastic mint packaging before having the set encapsulated by NGC).

NGC made it right but I had to pay shipping a 2nd time. Grrrr.

hopefully it wasn't a black curly hair! perhaps you could run the dna off of the hair and clone a PCGS grader to have with you at all times.

No hairs, yet, but in the two years with PCGS I did receive a slab back with a loose piece of plastic encapsulated along with the coin:

Not without the follicle.... the DNA retrievable from the hair will not identify the owner specifically. And yes, I have seen hairs in slabs - prior to cracking them. Cheers, RickO

Grape bubble gum dropped on it while slabbing and they couldnt get it all off?

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

  • I purchased a beautiful MS63 Fugio New Haven Restike in an old PCGS Green holder.....thought it had a cool die crack until I examined closer....and it was a human hair. I have to admit it did bother me having it in there but I have since sold the coin so it's someone else's problem image

Hmmm...I thought the mistake was in putting the coin in a hair slab.... Will have to reevaluate my understanding of this "slabbing" business.
  • Do they charge extra for that? I don't see it as an option on the submission form.

I have one around here some where that has an eye lash in it. Also have this one with what looks like a small piece of that brown paper used to wrap registered mail.
No image of the first one but check out the left side of the obvers.

Doesn't Marty have one where they slabbed half of a ham sandwich in with the coin or something? Or am I thinking of the zinc coin which is turning into salt all on its own?
I seem to recall he has a collection of things that ought not to have been slabbed.

  • I've seen a hair inside of a slab before. Straight black hair about an inch long. It's in my personal collection of error slabs. A 1996 Silver Eagle NGC MS69; it doesn't tie up too much money so I figured I'd keep it.

If you check out the 1946-S in my Jefferson Nickel collection and I do make note of it there, you will see what looks like a nick right in the center of the steps but it's really a tiny hair.

No hair, but I have a small piece of red lint in a PCGS MS67 lincoln cent slab - not immediately noticable, but once you see it, then that's all you ever see when you look at it!

I have seen several as well as receiving the little pieces of plastic floating inside. Really annoying and expensive to pay shipping both was for a correction. image
