Modern Warning... Silver Eagle Mint Sealed Sets & Spots

Just an FYI-

With the change in PCGS's policy on First Strikes a friend of mine sent his Mint Sealed package containing 2 sets of 20th Anniversary Silver Eagles to PCGS recently to get the First Strike Label on them.

He just got them back and 2 of the coins had spots and were graded low... I'm sure for the spots. One was a Regular proof and the other was one of his Reverse Proofs.

Those that think that you are safe from spotting by leaving them in the mint sealed packages might want to revisit your thinking...

This is just one guys experience and might not be representative of all cases.

  • That's how they grade sealed Packages, if it has spots you are graded accordingly. Happened to me.

NOT PCGS's Fault here, they grade them as they see 'em!

That is the gamble you take holding Mint Packages for a long time or buying Sealed Packages on EBay.

Just be glad it wasn't opened BEFORE he bought it and it was sealed up.

I have heard of those "IED's" sold & masked by a professionally looking Mint Sealed Package on EBay

The curse of the milk spots... some do, some never do... undoubtledly, the root cause lies at the US Mint... other conditions may exacerbate the appearance... however, the cure lies at the source... too bad we cannot get the provider interested in the issue. Cheers, RickO

  • this is why you want to see your coins first!! Also get a magnifier 5X to look at the coins. Learn about grading. Don't waste money grading coins you never saw. Who is to say that is the coin you actually sent in??Not to say there is any dishonesty but it sure helps if you see the coin first.

    Why grade? image
