5 circulated coins $1200 or less should be in most collections

I mainly collect proof coins but i am working on a box of 20 circulated coins. I want to go the circulated route because i want coins that were used in daily life and not put up as soon as they were released. I do not have much of a start. I have a PCGS VG8 Large cent, a 5 dollar PCGS vf35 1844 O. Basicly the budget is 250 dollars or less per coin. What 5 coins do you think need to be included?

I could build a box of 100 circulated coins - I love them.
There definitely needs to be a Draped Bust denomination, they look great circulated.
I'd say a CBH also.
A Chain Cent if you want to spend a little more.
If you're only going to get 5 coins, choose a popular design, and maybe a rarer date.

A barber half dollar would be another.
Two very highly used coins, findable in your price range, with a cool circulation history to ponder.
Try a '38 D Walker Half in XF or better. A great coin that you might be able to pick up in AU for under $250.
These circulated widely in the 40s and 50s and who doesn't like Walkers? They're gorgeous.
half-cent
1853 (or 1853-O) half dollar (the A&R are pretty cool)
half-dime
To each their own, but the ones I chose above are in addition to what you have (I probably wouldn't have gotten the $5 gold but that is still cool).
I would get ones that circulated, a lot, but that people nowadays either don't know about or don't see much of.
I wouldn't get a buff nickel, a merc, an IHC, a lincoln, any of the moderns, or even a barber.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
The 1921-S walker is still cheap in strong VG-10 at well under $100.
an XF small size Capped Bust Dime
a VF/XF 1875-S 20c Piece
a VF/XF better date Barber Half
an F/VF Carson City Morgan Dollar
1915 FN12 Barber half.
1909-S VF20 Indian Cent.
1899 Uncirculated Morgan dollar.
One So-Called dollar in Mint State.
peacockcoins
Seated half dollar
Trade dollar
Morgan dollar
Peace dollar
2) 1862-S Fine Seated Quarter. Not the toughest of the 60-s but nice to have.
3) Early Type Bust Half. Color and originality.
4) Type VF Trade Dollar
5) Type Fine Drapped Bust Cent.
Try picking up a nice honest original VG10 or Fine large sized capped bust quarter. You'll be a while hunting, but you can find them. You'll thank yourself down the road.
You might just manage to land a nice honest original Good draped bust quarter in or around this range, too.
Might be nice to pick up a VG-ish Seated Dollar, also. Been a while since I've priced those, but it seems like you could probably do it in your range.
You could certainly land a VG-ish draped bust half.
While their current hyper-popularity is a little bit off-putting (drives the prices to silly places relative to scarcity) a nice capped bust half is a classic thing to own. You won't touch the AU's these days at your budget, but for well under $200 you could find a sweet two-tone gray XF that would make most people happy. You could probably scoop up a nice VF for half that or so.
1. 1804 Half Cent in XF40
2. 1819 Large Cent in AU
3. 1857 Flying Eagle in AU
4. 1908 S Indian Cent in AU
5. 1912 D Liberty nickel in AU.
I'd also recommend an 1851-O 3 Cent Silver (and 3CS really), a middle grade, slate gray, CC Morgan, a Capped Bust Half, and a Flying Eagle cent. All beautiful and historical pieces in your price range.
half cent
two cent
three cent (silver as a personal preference)
half dime
double dime
It's always fun to show these to non collectors. (And a great bar bet, too.

Right from the PCGS priceguide..
1804 Half cent ef40.......$400
1857 Flying Eagle AU55.....$250
1819 Large Cent AU55........$400
1908 S Indian Cent.AU-55...$200
1912 D Liberty Nickel....MS60.......290 AU not listed probably around $200 though.
That ads up to $1450 dollars at full PCGS priceguide. You should be easily able to shave about $200 dollars off that total, puting you at $1250.
Not sure what guide you are using, but remind me not to use it when buying coins.

1. 1928 Oregon Commemorative MS64
2. 1917 Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter AU58
3. 1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel MS65
4. 1908-S Indian Cent AU55
5. 1909vdb (coming soon)
...I guess they aren't all circulated, but a couple fit.
An 1883 N/C Nickel (surprised no one mentioned it yet) - a nice AU will set you back almost nothing
A Barber Dime, Quarter & Half (except for the 1892 Ps which were saved), - a nice AU type won't set you back much
A Type IHC in AU would be a good idea.
With the money less than $1,200 spent, take the spouse somewhere for the weekend.
