Morgan - is this a good coin? (NEW PICTURES)

I'm after a Morgan 1881-S MS62-64 PL and I found this one. As I'm new to coin collecting I thought I might as well ask for some opinions of this coin before I buy it. I think the photos are taken with lack of a light source, all the sellers pictures looks simular. What do you think of it?

    That ought to fill the bill. Can't see the chatter infront of Miss Liberty. Does it have a return privilege
    in case you don't like it in hand?

    I think you'll be a happier camper if you look for one of those in ms65 or better.

    None stated in the auction. I guess I can resell it myself if I don't like it. Since it's slabbed by NGC it shouldn't be a problem. I was mostly curious about how good you think the strike is?

    I'm sure you're right, however they run about 3 times as high in price as well.

    Decent strike IMO, but then there is a reason its a 63. 63's are not real attractive in PL and DMPL land. Thats a common date so you shud be able to get a nice 65 for around $200.

    As far as I can tell from the image the strike looks fine, but nothing spectacular for an '81-S as these were extremely well-made and probably the most common date Morgan in 66+.

    Show me a strike like this on a '92-O, though, and I'll go truly ga-ga.

    That strike is good. 81 San Frans are known for their excellent strikes and this is no exception. That's
    why I mentioned hits in the field that can't be seen in the pic (in front of Miss Lib).

    The strike looks good, nice breast feathers, hair, tips of the eagles wings, all the high points look good; although a larger photo would be better.

    As far as... is this the coin for you, it depends on what you want to, can, or are willing to spend.

    MS63 to MS64 is usually an affordable grade and a very nice looking coin. Coins tend to start jumping in price at MS65 and MS66 because the strike and luster usually need to be above average for MS65 and up grades.

    MS67s start to look gem mint at that grade and the price reflects it. Go to an MS68 or MS69 and you better be ready to break out the check book for those! But, the coins will look like they were minted yesterday. Pick up an MS70 Morgan well, get ready to take out a second mortgage on the house!

    Based on the images, it looks like a perfectly acceptable and attractive Morgan. IMO, there is no need to go for a higher grade. Of course an MS-65 or 66 is nicer, but the price is way too high for such a common date.
    I've never had a problem with MS-63s, as so many in here do. They are often a great value in a world of coin perfectionists.
    Sit back, relax and enjoy your 63.

    Got the coin today. Didn't look like I thought it would, I'm assuming that PLs in general look different in hand vs on photo. I know the saying goes "buy the coin not the plastic" or something like that, still I got a little pissed that there is a deep major scratch in the holder on the obverse side in the middle of the coin area. It doesn't show up on photos unless there is good lightning. Here are my own pictures of the coin. I must say that I like the photos of this coin better than I like it in hand.

    I still say that there is nothing wrong with that coin!
    I like it and it's not an arm and a leg to own!

    I'm not unhappy with it image. As being new to coins I just wasn't aware of how a PL looked in hand vs photos. My photos are more like the coin in hand vs his photos (maybe scans?).

    Pl and DMPL surfaces are very hard to capture in photos. I find often a milky looking background might be PL or semi-PL.

    For your photos you may want to get your lights up higher.

    The psychology of coin buying is fascinating and we are all at its capricious whims.

    Throw in the static photo(s) or scan(s) used by most sellers and frequent disappointment is predictable, or it would be if more coin buyers chose to learn about grading and coin photography as you are doing.

    Thank you so much for your follow-through on this thread! That you say you are relatively new to coin buying is refreshing but the fact is we all are new to what ever stage of "sophistication" we have arrived at and are working through: the psychological dynamics of buying coins are still very much present, even if we may have acquired the skills to modulate the ups and downs.

    For many of us the hunt for a specific coin or for a killer buy is still a wonderful source of chills and thrills and one of the reasons some of us are fanatical enough to stay in the game in spite of cumulative disappointments.

    If I ever reach the jaded status of becomming impervious to the thrill of the hunt (or in my case the thrill of a new Ike revelation), I'll know I'm at least half dead, maybe already 6 feet under. . .
    Modern dollars are like children - before you know it they'll be all grown up.....

    I found my tripod and I managed to take some new pictures that shows a bit more of the PL fields. It's late in the evening so the light gave them a yellowish tone.

    you have to set the white balance so the camera knows what white
    is supposed to be
    this can be adjusted with software after, but it is better to set it initially
