Need help on this 1886 IHC

GoldbullyGoldbully Posts: 17,941 ✭✭✭✭✭
Could someone please explain the yellowish "staining" on the obverse of the IHC?

I just received this in the mail and I love the coin, but the yellow color really bothers me.

It appears someone took a swab with dipping cleaner on it and went swipe.

Or, it appears a small spill was involved.

Would you send this coin back??? Thanks for your help.

I think you're seeing alloy streaking.

Cannot tell from the pictures if it is a stain or as ambro suggested... use high power magnification - in hand is always better. Cheers, RickO

Ambro and RickO, I'm not familiar with alloy streaking.

Is it something that will keep this coin from being slabbed?

    Thanks for your help.

Under 10x magnification it looks like a consistent goldish color.

How else can I determine if it is alloy streaking?
  • Yes, but not for the reason you are questioning. Respectfully, John Curlis

John, tell me what you don't like...is it the spots???

Be brutal, I can take it.

Alloy streaking is when there is an imporper mix of the tin and zinc with the copper. It makes a woodgrain toning or some bright (more tin & zinc) stripes.

1886's typically come lighter or straw-colored due to the planchert supplier, but yours looks dipped.
