Ebay question regarding sending change when paid in cash

Haven't seen this posted before so I figured i'd ask my fellow boardies. I sold an item and with shipping it came to $4.75. The buyer mailed me a $5 dollar bill. Would you include a quarter packaged with the card?

Thanks folks for your opinions.

I don't see a problem with it either. It should not add to the postage cost.
  • I would,
but only after I checked to make sure that the quarter wouldn't increase the weight so the mailing charge went up.
  • I'd send 25 pennies and not to not spend them all in one place. image
  • Just keep the quarter. I'm sure the buyer isn't expecting change.

Send $1.00 and ask the buyer to send .75 cents back.
  • Thanks fellas for the feedback. I am inclined to just keep the quarter and that's what I would expect if I had sent cash for an item but the buyer has a decent amount of feedback and I figure if I keep my customers happy, they will return.

Besides, what am I going to to with an extra quarter? Uh-oh, I just opened a can of worms with that hypothetical question - Where's Lee??????

    Thanks again folks.

Take the quarter to the grocery store and buy a gumball with it, then ship the gumball with the cards. When he opens the package, he will be delighted not only to receive his cards, but he also gets to enjoy the pleasure of a delicious gumball. If he's the type to complain about where his change is, just tell him you bought the gumball with it because you were afraid he might buy drugs with it if you sent him the money.

Tape the quarter to the back of the card.

I have sent cash probably half dozen times and have never received change in return, although I would agree with an earlier poster, that it would be good pr.

    Lee,

I think you'd be a fun person to hang out with. I always enjoy your responses. A lot of times they interject a touch of humor into an otherwise ho, hum, stress filled day.

    Thanks,

Glad to be of assistance Mike. I attribute it to a constant flow of alcohol and generally having no life.

  • Totally, think about it this way:

    1. If he is EXPECTING the change back the sending it may prevent you from getting a bad review from a crazy person
    2. If he is NOT expecting the change back and you send it, this action could trigger the "wow this guy is really considerate" portion of the buyer's brain and get you positive feedback
    3. At the end of the day it costs you a quarter...so why the hell not right?

  • I alwys send cash for items less than $15 and just round up to the next dollar amount, only about 1 out of 5 will send change back, which is fine with me. I don't want to go through the trouble of sending coins in the first place, so why would I expect them to do it. I would rather see them throw in a couple of extra worthless or low value cards, I like surprises.

You're reading way too much into this.

The guy could care less about the extra quarter he paid.

It was faster and easier to just slip a 5 spot into the envelope.

Nobody ever expects change when they do that ... good God, it's a frickin quarter! image
  • I send cash all the time for non-PayPal items under $20, and always let the seller know that I am not expecting change.

You should go buy a money order in the amount of 25 cents and send it back with his purchased item.
