80 Year Old Retires Finally...

Got Abe in change at lunch today, he has been dutifully serving for 80 years, apparently without a break as he is rather looking worse for the wear after such a long career. But he has retired to my Lincoln orphanage, he is the oldest I have gotten in a few months, though my son got a 99 year old Abe in change last month in town.

I found a 1920 one day that was pretty beat up too.

<< <i>Sad story.. but very true. My Mother always saves Wheat cents for me... a few months ago she gave me one and it was a bit dark - and on closer examination, a bit deteriorated. I tried to see the date - and wow.. 1914... nice - oh, wait a minute... no, could it be??? Well, I am sure it is... however, this coin had obviously spent some time on the top of a car battery (common practice years ago)... and yes, I am certain (although it is hard to see), under magnification.. it is a 1914D. Sad, Sad story. Cheers, RickO >>

Hmmm. You wouldn't be the "nasty headmaster", would you?
My icon IS my coin. It is a gem 1949 FBL Franklin.
I've actually done my part as I've put some wheats back INTO circulation. My dad stored them in a big plastic bucket that dated to...when they were new, at least-and when the basement flooded last April apparently they got wet, so I had several green moldy ones. A couple 44s, a 41, and a few that I couldn't tell what date they were. Right now they are still sitting in the spending jar (and if it floods where THAT is, I'll have bigger problems!) but they will likely enter circulation again by the end of 2008. They were likely pulled out in the 1950s, as if it was not for the damage they were quite nice. More then likely they will be put into a machine at my bank that's pretty cool-it's like coinstar but it all goes into your account, no fees.
Never found a `1909, even though Ive looked through change since about 1964.
