Good Metal Detector?

My friend asked me to look for a good metal detector that is under $1000, and if possible can tell how deep and what type of metal it has found. I thought I would ask here because I don't know anything about metal detectors.
Also, can the Minelab gold detectors also detect other types of metal?

    In that price range I would suggest the White's DFX.... can be used out of the box, or tuned (programmed - easily) for special conditions. Top of the line. Cheers, RickO
