The Official "This card is worthless now, but it brings back memories" Thread.
Everyone has cards from their past that used to be highly sought after, but now the value is next to nothing. Let's show 'em off and bring back some memories.
This is one that comes to mind. Bo was a bad man!

These just happen to be former NY Mets rookie cards from the 80's.

<< <i>Yep - along with the 1989 Hoops. >>
you can still get $70 for an 89 Hoops Series 1 Robinson in PSA 10. That card's centering was often below standard.

I actually had two of these until 3 years ago and I sold one for low bv.
Still my favorite player despite his over use of "vitamins"
<< <i>Showing my age here:
Did you also have the error card that had "Blue Jays" as the team?
BLUE JAYS!!!
BTW.....1979 Best Year to play FLip wars...about 8 different colored team borders, if your color matched the color of the card just played, you win the stack!Flip War!
And no I didn't send these in to be graded I bought them that way. Before I knew which grading companies were the good ones.
<< <i>detroitfan, i remember that Bump Wills card was "some type of error" card and was very hot in 1979....do you remember the the "story" behind that card? >>
Hey guys, yes, both the Bump Wills and the Graig Nettles were error cards. The Wills in the original picture was the corrected Rangers card, which at least for me was tougher to get at the time. The Nettles card was the "C" Nettles error (see the spelling of his name on the back scan). This was the hottest of a dozen or more errors in the 1981 Fleer, selling in the $15-$20 range back in the day. It may just be my personal recollection, but errors were almost more of the rage than rookie cards back then. By the way, here is a scan of the Bump Wills error card:
and I have the bump wills error card.. whooo hooo can I retire?
<< <i>i JUST WENT THROUGH MY 79'S FROM THE RECENT bbce break

I bought mine at the flea-market along with my Rickey Henderson rc for $5.00 back then

<< <i>I don't have any scans of them but who remembers how hot the first Upper Deck basketball cards were? Where are my LJ rookies now? >>
I got a box of those for Christmas when they first came out. The Mutombo rookie was on fire back then.

<< <i>I stole these scans off eBay, but these cards were pretty cool (I thought) back in 1991.
I still need the four factory set versions (and the World Series set from that year and previous year) if anyone's got them. Yes, yes, laugh at me if you want but I am trying to complete my 1986-95 Fleer/Ultra insert set project.

I think it's sad that I can't get excited about pulling a $3 rookie out of a pack like I used to.
I got into the hobby in 86' so there was tons of hype for Eric Davis, Daryl Strawberry, Joyner, Gooden, Canseco....at least those guys had some damn good years...same with matt Williams etc.
the fizzlers were clowns like matt Nokes, Jeffries, Meulens, Maas. (pretty much every hyped yankee super prospect) sell em high!
This was probably about the time that I bought the 1989 Upper Deck hi-numbers set for $50.

<< <i>When Upper Deck came out in 89' with their "premium" cards I was selling them for nearly $2 a pack. THe high series was off the hook. Jim Abbot RC, Tom "Flash" Gordon....I got $10 - $15 each for them
<< <i>
89 Upper Deck...oh the hype!!! Both of the Nolan Ryans, 3D and football, are still two of my all time favorites.
$50 for the high number set!! Yeah, after all, Jerome Walton was in there.
1991 Stadium Club Hockey!!
I remember buying tons of packs of this stuff thinking with baseball being so hot this had to be good!!
Remember how bad the sequencing and distribution was in some of those?? I may be remembering wrong, but I think the High # packs had 2 high number cards in each pack. I opened a box and every single pack had the exact same two high number cards!! I remember one was Junior Felix, cant remember the other.
I was very upset at the time, because I didn't pull an Abbot, Walton, Ryan FB, Zeile. However I did pull two Griffeys, which at the time I was just barely happy about.
Did anyone else have a similar experience with those boxes?
<< <i>This card was as hot as the Griffey back in '89
Still have to love the look of 89 UD though!!
What was the high on the 1985 Topps McGwire? (I wouldn't exactly call the McGwire worthless. You can still get $5 to $15 out of them)
Shane
If I remember they were in red wax wrappers but anyways the sides of the wax were white so if you pressed down firmly with any decent light the black line would clearly stand out against the otherwise yellow cards.
The kids in the neighborhood thought we were the luckiest people ever. One kid traded my his new NES controller for a set but his mom came by the next day and had the deal voided.

<< <i>Didn't the Canseco sell for over $100? (In raw form since there wasn't grading back then).

During the 1988 Playoffs, the 86 Donruss Canseco was definitely going for $100 at a couple of shows I attended.
During the Maris chase of 98, I saw 85 Topps McGwires going for $50-$80. By that point, people were way more conscious of the conditions of cards so the prices varied more. PSA had started doing their thing, but I never really saw alot of graded cards at small, local shows. I sold my only McGwire during that time for $70 I think.
