The Official "This card is worthless now, but it brings back memories" Thread.

Everyone has cards from their past that used to be highly sought after, but now the value is next to nothing. Let's show 'em off and bring back some memories.

This is one that comes to mind. Bo was a bad man!

  • I have always loved that Bo Jackson card. I remember buying those boxes and racks like a mad man back in the day, hoping to pull Bo.

    How about these?

These just happen to be former NY Mets rookie cards from the 80's.

you can still get $70 for an 89 Hoops Series 1 Robinson in PSA 10. That card's centering was often below standard.
  • I don't have any older cards scanned but here is one still in my bucket. What a waste of $20.

I actually had two of these until 3 years ago and I sold one for low bv.

Still my favorite player despite his over use of "vitamins"

Sooner, good call on Kurt Warner's "1st rookie card". Reminds me of this one:

Did you also have the error card that had "Blue Jays" as the team?
  • fandangofandango Posts: 2,622
    RIGHT!

    BLUE JAYS!!!

BTW.....1979 Best Year to play FLip wars...about 8 different colored team borders, if your color matched the color of the card just played, you win the stack!Flip War!
  • I forgot about these. I believe they were orginally thought to have some future value when they came out:

And no I didn't send these in to be graded I bought them that way. Before I knew which grading companies were the good ones.

Hey guys, yes, both the Bump Wills and the Graig Nettles were error cards. The Wills in the original picture was the corrected Rangers card, which at least for me was tougher to get at the time. The Nettles card was the "C" Nettles error (see the spelling of his name on the back scan). This was the hottest of a dozen or more errors in the 1981 Fleer, selling in the $15-$20 range back in the day. It may just be my personal recollection, but errors were almost more of the rage than rookie cards back then. By the way, here is a scan of the Bump Wills error card:

I bought mine at the flea-market along with my Rickey Henderson rc for $5.00 back then image
  • I don't have any scans of them but who remembers how hot the first Upper Deck basketball cards were? Where are my LJ rookies now?
  • What about Joe Charboneau in 1981? 1985 Topps Doc Gooden? How about those 1991 Leaf Gold Nolan Ryan cards? Or just the 1991 Leaf in general? They were hot after the 1990 Leaf. All the 1991 Stadium Club. I think Frank Thomas sold for $25.

    1984 Topps Darryl Strawberry

  • Do not have scans either but did we forget:
    1987 Fleer Kevin Seitzer
    1988 Fleer Greg Jefferies
    1988 Score Matt Nokes
1988 Donruss Matt Williams (had about 5 complete sets minus Matt, never could find him)
1989 Donruss Hensley "Bam Bam" Muelens (maybe that one was just me)
    1990 anything Kevin Maas

Some other "maybe it was just me" cards

    1979 Topps Willie Wilson
    1982 Topps Von Hayes
    1984 Donruss Ron Darling

The 1979 Wills "Rangers" and 1981 Nettles cards are great examples, I remember the hype behind them well. They were both some of first hyped variation cards in the modern era IMO.

I truly believe that Kevin Maas will someday make a comeback in the same way that Roy Hobbs did, and that my rookie cards of Maas will make me a rich man.

This thread has brought back alot of memories. Gregg Jefferies was my first super hype rookie. And Kevin Maas, Oh Man! I forgot all about that dude!! How hot was he for about a month??? I remember that little red Classic set that had his card along with that "Nolan Knows Bo" card. And first year UD basketball was so ridiculously hot when it came out. Mutombo and all of the UNLV guys.

I think it's sad that I can't get excited about pulling a $3 rookie out of a pack like I used to.
  • When Upper Deck came out in 89' with their "premium" cards I was selling them for nearly $2 a pack. THe high series was off the hook. Jim Abbot RC, Tom "Flash" Gordon....I got $10 - $15 each for them image

I got into the hobby in 86' so there was tons of hype for Eric Davis, Daryl Strawberry, Joyner, Gooden, Canseco....at least those guys had some damn good years...same with matt Williams etc.

the fizzlers were clowns like matt Nokes, Jeffries, Meulens, Maas. (pretty much every hyped yankee super prospect) sell em high!

Probably about 1989, I went to a local shop, and the owner showed me a 1985 Donruss rack pack with Eric Davis on the front. I couldn't believe it. He said he wanted $70 for it or trade. I asked him what he would trade it for, and he responded a 1985 minor league McGwire card. In today's market, the McGwire is worth more than the Davis, but the unopened rack pack would have the most value, but not near $70.

This was probably about the time that I bought the 1989 Upper Deck hi-numbers set for $50.

89 Upper Deck...oh the hype!!! Both of the Nolan Ryans, 3D and football, are still two of my all time favorites.

$50 for the high number set!! Yeah, after all, Jerome Walton was in there.

  • what about the first year upperdeck football? Montana Heroes lol. i PRE-Sold boxes and factory sets for $50-$60 a box. then they mass produced them
  • This card was as hot as the Griffey back in '89

Haha!! Wow! Todd freakin Zeile!!! Yeah, that 89 UD High number set was loaded.

Remember how bad the sequencing and distribution was in some of those?? I may be remembering wrong, but I think the High # packs had 2 high number cards in each pack. I opened a box and every single pack had the exact same two high number cards!! I remember one was Junior Felix, cant remember the other.

I was very upset at the time, because I didn't pull an Abbot, Walton, Ryan FB, Zeile. However I did pull two Griffeys, which at the time I was just barely happy about.

Did anyone else have a similar experience with those boxes?

Didn't the Canseco sell for over $100? (In raw form since there wasn't grading back then).

What was the high on the 1985 Topps McGwire? (I wouldn't exactly call the McGwire worthless. You can still get $5 to $15 out of them)

I remember recruiting my little sister to bike over to the Revco and help me find every pack of Fleer that had these inserts in them. We probably had a box of packs that all had these cards.

If I remember they were in red wax wrappers but anyways the sides of the wax were white so if you pressed down firmly with any decent light the black line would clearly stand out against the otherwise yellow cards.

The kids in the neighborhood thought we were the luckiest people ever. One kid traded my his new NES controller for a set but his mom came by the next day and had the deal voided.

    EDIT: Talking '91 Fleer here
Always looking for 1993-1999 Baseball Finest Refractors and1994 Football Finest Refractors.

During the 1988 Playoffs, the 86 Donruss Canseco was definitely going for $100 at a couple of shows I attended.

During the Maris chase of 98, I saw 85 Topps McGwires going for $50-$80. By that point, people were way more conscious of the conditions of cards so the prices varied more. PSA had started doing their thing, but I never really saw alot of graded cards at small, local shows. I sold my only McGwire during that time for $70 I think.
  • frankhardyfrankhardy Posts: 8,168 ✭✭✭✭✭
I know a guy (although I can't think of who it is right now) who sold 4 1985 Topps McGwires for $400 each during 1998. Oh, I forgot to mention - these were raw!
