Brett Butler collection thread - Topps Vault mailday 7/29/11

*** Updated 12/3/08 ***

Just finished updating the inventory. Up to a total of 115 cards - I'm waiting for PSA to assign slots to 14 of them. I thought that instead of having a bunch of pix cluttering the place, I'd just post a couple of links. Lemme know what you guys think.

What do you generally have to pay for a random 80s Butler PSA 10? I would imagine you get most of them for the opening bid.

    Nice cards.

I love the 84 Fleer Update card. It is just awesome and something I like to put together in the future.

I average around $15, Lee. My major suppliers at this time are Roger, 4SC and occasionally Sims. Brian (bkritz) also comes up with stuff for me. I've done a couple of submissions with Mark (gosteelers) that I'm anxiously waiting for results on. At some point, I'm going to have to start evaluating and submitting cards myself, not only because of the expense of buying them from others, but also because I'd like to develop a better eye for grading myself. I've gotta think it'd be way more rewarding to submit my own cards and feel the anticipation of the wait and the thrill or agony of the results.

Luckily, I can read lips and can tell you what he's saying on that 1997 Donruss card:

"Yes, I'd like to order a large pizza with extra cheese, ham, pepperoni...oh, and no anchovies, and I mean NO anchovies! You put anchovies on this thing and you're in BIG trouble, okay???"

Great collection, Geordie, but a bit of a travesty having him in a Giants uniform.

    Nothing short of incredible Geordie.

I've never considered collecting a specific player - it's such a large task - gotta give you credit.

I think they should add Hanna Montana to the list!

Thanx for sharing - some sweet cards.

  • I thought Brett was really funny in Grace under Fire. Only on one card with the Mets?? Wasn't he the first player Clemons pitched to? I have heard that trivia somewhere before. Have not heard much about him after his stroke in 07. I hope all is well with him.

Just finished updating the original post. These six were received & scanned in the past few days. Two go directly to the registry; the other four are awaiting slots to be assigned.

An upgrade, and a new one. I got the sticker from boopotts. He said he coulda won a nice little bet if someone would have told him a Butler fan instead of a Murphy fan was gonna win his auction. image

    Nice collection, Geordie!

However, I'm a little surprised no one ever made a card picturing him laying down a bunt. I mean, he was one of the best bunters of the decade...
  • TNP777TNP777 Posts: 5,710 ✭✭✭
Drew - there're a couple of bunting Butlers above. I agree, though - as proficient a bunter as he was, you'd think there would be a lot more.

Here's a new one that arrived today. At the moment I have 16 cards that are awaiting new slots to be assigned. I wish the process was a little faster.

Today's mail! First post is updated. The '89 Bowman Tiffany and the '91 Bowman are being sent back to PSA for reslabbing. The Tiffany has a misspelled name, and the '91 Bowman is actaully a '92.

updated to include scans from my submissions and incomings from 4SC and Brian (bkritz).

    Geordie

edit: hmm, 2000 posts. Hooray for me! I've probably contributed something useful in about 13 of them. image

edit #2: I should probably edit the first post and restart it where it belongs, over on the registry board.

Looking great Geordie. It must feel awesome to be that close to completing your project.

So...for the '91 Donruss...there are indeed both "INC" and "INC." variations for both borders? I was under them impression that the Factory Set version only had "INC." and the hobby version had either/or. I need to start purchasing some more cards I guess!

    Nice refractors!

As a Giants fan, I still remember him there, though it was only for a few seasons...

Also, count me as disappointed that Geordie's images are all now dead links...

  • TNP777TNP777 Posts: 5,710 ✭✭✭
Hmm, those refractors are nice. PM sent, Mr. Wombat.

As far as the dead pix, I did some rescanning and that messed several things up. I'll see what I can do to update them, Drew. For those that care, my master set was updated today - I'm now at 92.99% complete. Randy's 'woo' smiley would be pretty cool right now. image

    Ahhh...that's better.

Geordie, your scans are really, really nice. I just got a new scanner and I feel like I'm not getting the most out of it.

Congrats, too, on getting up to 92.99%. That's spectacular!

Thanks for the nice comments, Drew. I'm using a CanoScan 4400F, which is very user friendly and produces pretty nice scans.

Wait...I think that's the same scanner I just got. I'll check at home, but I'm pretty sure. It seems to have trouble with the new shiny cards, at least with the settings I've been using.

Are you gonna get your 92 DK Super graded? Either way, I think you should share a scan, just to make me jealous...

That does appear to be true. Here's the game log from Clemens' first game: Game Log 5/15/1984 Butler grounded out to the first baseman, unassisted. (I wonder if it was a drag bunt that went a little too far?)

    And...wait...Butler had a stroke? Really?

I haven't even thought about submitting it, I probably won't. I'm pretty happy to have it, though - thanks once again for getting my rear in gear to obtain it. I know there are a great many player collectors that have been looking for a '92 super for a loooong time, obviously including you.

As far as the stroke goes, yeah, a mini one - back in '07 when he was managing the AA Mobile BayBears. Linky

Ahhh...I don't believe you. You just blew up the scan of your regular card, didn't you?

Seriously, though, is it really that clean and sharp? Or, does your scan cut off the edges? I'd imagine that most of these cards are in fairly rough shape, knowing how they were produced and used. The collector at Frank Thomas Collection.com has an example that's in really rough shape.

I'm not a big card submitter (actually got my first ever submission in the mail today!), but if I were you, I'd submit it for the master set.
  • TNP777TNP777 Posts: 5,710 ✭✭✭
Yeah, I did cut smooth out the rough spots a little. It's not in the worst shape actually, but the corners aren't the sharpest and there are a few edge dings - way nicer than the Thomas you linked.

Wow, thanks for the kind words, Abe. I have far from the most complete collection from the era, and not even for Will Clark. I'm proud of it and love to display it for others, though. I'm glad you enjoy it, too. I always encourage collectors to put their collections online, as it not only helps you connect with other collectors, but it will help you connect with your collection too!

I'm sure you Geordie would agree with that! (And, every time I browse his site I start to wonder if I want to take the time to scan the backs of all my cards...)
  • MBMiller25MBMiller25 Posts: 6,057 ✭✭
Nice players sets guys (Butler and Clark). As a fellow player collector myself (Paul O'Neill) I can really appreciate the difficulty in acquiring high grade cards of certain players! Please keep us updated as to your progress! Again, well done.

<< <i>(And, every time I browse his site I start to wonder if I want to take the time to scan the backs of all my cards...) >>

The main reason I decided to scan the backs is because of the minor variations that sometimes appear there, such as the INC./INC variations in Donruss and */** variations from Topps - things like that. Also, many of the companies put action shots/pictures on the back, so why not show them off.

Great collection you should be proud of you achivement! I have to ask though it looks like quite a few of the cards you have left are semi easy to get a hold of. Any reason your not finishing it off or just not in a hurry? Just curious I guess.

Cory - I'm not really in a hurry. You're right, the cards I need are very easy to find, I just need to get busy finding them. image

<< <i>Is it right for some of his Leaf and O-Pee-Chee cards to be included but not the rest? >>

Mush - the only reason the registry is the size it is is because as I obtain new cards, I request that new slots be added. When I started the registry, I don't think there were more than 25 cards on the master list.

    << <i>VERY NICE collection...congrats! That 1980 TCMA is really cool. >>

Mike - thanks! I think it's one of my top five favorites. I submitted during the January special with Nick. I was hoping for at least an 8, but I'm happy with the 7. It was one of the few cards I sent in that came with the original registry, so I was happy to not only slab a pretty cool card but also fill a hole in the list.

    << <i>I think you need this: '86 OPC >>

CNote - I've been following that card since it was first listed for $100. It's now at $30 - I'll either wait it out until it comes down to where I think it should, or I'll wait until another comes along. I'm not in a hurry at all. Thanks for the heads up, though.
