Where is the PSA Graded Vintage Football?

Hi All:

I am a long time PSA set collector and message board follower but first time poster. I predominantly collect football sets, focusing on the 1948-60 years, Bowman and Topps.

Here is the link to my sets:

http://psacard.com/SetRegistry/OtherSets.aspx?m=1457

Most of the purchases I make are on Ebay. Lately there have been very few PSA graded cards available. It got me frustrated to the point that I started working on 1950's baseball sets, of which there are many more PSA cards available on Ebay.

Has anyone else noticed the drop off in PSA-graded vintage football cards on Ebay? If so, any explanation/thoughts?

Just curious if anyone else has noticed this trend.

JM

I'd rather invest in cards than stocks.

  • I would have to agree! I collect primarily early '70's football insert cards... ( '70 glossies/supers, '71 game inserts/posters, '71 kelloggs, etc) and it has been extremely tough to find any high grade examples as of late. I've seen this before and it is usually in the middle of the summer when baseball season is hot and heavy and football is the last thing on everyone's mind. We are only a month and a half away from training camp and I expect things to liven up a bit once the men put on the pads again!

No money in it so the people with the cards wont pay the grading fees. Just my guess.

Welcome to the boards!...even though you have been a long time nemesis to me on ebay! image

I have noticed this as well. Few fish in the vintage football pond.
I agree that mid-summer is not the ideal time for vintage football on ebay....it will pick up as we near the start of the season. Vintage football is so much scarcer than its baseball counterparts....so the supply will never be near baseball, but during the summer it is even more noticable than ever.

No not humor, but when you cant get $5 for an 8 or $10 for a 9 , its not worth it.

there has been a hug drop off in a lot of vintagecard, especially pre war baseball

i think seller got sick of letting their stuff go for really cheap dut to the recession and have stopped listing auctions....mostly they will list it BIN it seems

i think ebay auctions are dying and auction houses are winning

JM, welcome to the boards... like BDB your name is very familiar to me having bid against you and on some of your own auctions.

It does seem there is less vintage football being offered up these days, but I hear a lot of the baseball guys saying the same thing. I think part of it is just the usual summer slow down with people spending less time indoors at their computers. The hammer prices do not seem to be any lower than usual, in fact some are at record highs according to VCP, so I don't know how much the economy is coming into play.

Now then, if you will excuse me, I have to go check out your sets!

Like others, I've also cursed your eBay buying name on a few occasions ;-) back when I was building some graded sets. 1950 Bowmans I think it was? Glad to see you posting! Keep it up. We need as many solid vintage football guys around here as we can get.

Like the others have said, Summertime and the off season always lead to slower eBay activity for football cards. Toss in a slowing economy this year and it does seem to be having a slight effect on the supply / demand factor for certain years. Especially PSA 7's, common 8's and a lot of the late 60's / 70's cards prices ... on which Gaspipe is correct ... some of them are barely recouping their grading fees. Sellers tend to stop listing these cards when they reach that level, and most of the bigger dealers are in their 'bottom feeding buying mode' all summer long ... trying to stock up their inventory at nice prices.

I'm guessing that the new half point grading flurry probably kept a few more cards off eBay this summer, with dealers and collectors pulling their stronger cards off the market in hopes of getting them bumped on a resubmission. The new half point grades seemed to have "raised the bar" a little for certain years, and rumor has it that even the mighty Davalillo is considering making the move to "100 graded sets in PSA 8.2 or better."

It will be interesting to see what happens when the NFL season starts up again. Will the football card market take off like it normally does? Or will it sputter somewhat coming out of the gate?

Either way, it's never bleak enough to think about switching over to baseball!

So suck it up man. Put your helmet back on .... get back in that game and go snipe yourself a few football cards! ;-)

Rumor has it that Fuzzdude is telling all Ebay sellers to hold their vintage football off ebay and just sell it all to him. Whenever he gets too many multiple copies of the same set(usually 6 or 7) he sells his excess to Couldabeena.

Thus the term .... a Fuzzy economy!

Don't worry Jim, We're all holding some cards aside for you. We're just waiting for the prices to go back up! lol

Although on a more serious note ... Jim, I imagine because of your profession (and your collection), you might have some interesting ideas on what the next year or two could have in store for the vintage football card market. Any thoughts you'd like to share with the class?

  • Welcome JM!

I think Mike summed it up nicely.

It seems to me that vintage football has been even more scarce than usual on eBay this summer. We'll see how it does in the Fall...

If the summer lull is getting the best of you, 50's baseball seems like a good idea, but what are you going to do in the Fall when both football and baseball are available?image Non-sport cards can be the gift that keeps on giving too -- a lot of those sets show up off and on all year.

Very nice sets, by the way -- you have several of my favorites on that list!

Yes welcome to the boards, and it goes for me as well that your name rings a bell and brings to mind many times yelling obcenities at my Ebay after losing out to you! LOL

I am always searching for the Football as well, I agree that there is not much in comparison to Baseball especially the 52 Bowman Large Football which I primarily collect, many times I will look for a player from the early 50's and get zero listings. Its frustrating

Also feel free to check out our "Love the Vintage Football" thread in the Sportscard & Memoribilia forum, a lot of our new pick ups are shown in the thread and its great to go through checking out the cards. Hope to see you there and maybe you can show off some of your gems!
  • I think one reason also is the fact that there is just less football cards out there than baseball. Much less I think. Kids just didn't buy football in the 50's.

    yes welcome mr mazzeo
I have been on the short side of your ebay bids many times and remember sending you a number of cards you bought from me.
A very nice vintage collection indeed!!!!!

Don't even try to compare BB to FB. Although BB probably has 10X++ pops......the number of collectors is way more than 10X FB. way more.
Fb is a bargain...but it always has been and always will be.

My fellow collectors have it down pretty good....low prices right now....why list and possibly lose $
I have 100's of pre-1970 vintage FB ungraded. Why send in (i really do not graded cards..only 1 sub in last 8 years) and get a 5 or 6 and not get anything for it???? So anything that can't get at least an 8 is probably not worth sending in.

I also am waiting for some nice FB !!!!!!!!!
THere are some nice whales swimming in the ebay ocean.......putting up some big $ bids.....this poor minnow has to fight for the scraps.

  • Glad you joined the boards JM. You are right. Graded vintage football has been scarce and all for the reasons listed in the previous posts.
Hope to see you posting more often (hopefully it'll keep you from outbidding me on cardsimage

Thanks to all for your welcoming comments and feedback on this issue. And the comments about competing against me on EBay gave me a chuckle, especially knowing I tend to lose more than I win!

Good luck to all with your collections and I look forward to posting on other topics.

    Best
