Looks like a die crack to me.

I think the coin looks whizzed per those photos.

    Got any more???
  • I saw the coin on Ebay, but didnt pull the trigger. So I dont have any other pics. I wanted to get some opinions on a grade from the folks here.

not the best picture but it looks perahaps AU depending on the luster and actual color. what you're seeing is from clashed dies, it's the outline of the wreath. if you look at the reverse you can make out the obverse portrait very easily. with these 3CN's it's hard to find them without clash, it was a very common occurance.

It's in the EF/AU range, I would say.
  • Interesting.........Thanks keets!

Not my series, but does the obverse look a lot more worn than the reverse? I can clearly see to clash on the reverse. As for the mark under America I would have voted die crack.

You can clearly see the outline of the mouth on the reverse at 9 o'clock to the right of the leaf. It's upside-down, of course.

it's important to remember that the clashed dies would need to be polished with the result being lost detail and the appearance of a weak strike. that makes grading these from a picture very difficult. i have seen much "weaker looking strikes" that graded MS61-62. seeing the coin in hand allows you to judge luster vs. wear: if the area that looks weak(in this case, the area above Liberty's forehead/ear and on the numerals) has full luster then the "wear" is the result of polishing off the detail after a clash.

i once bought an 1866 that looked XF with nice color and full luster in a club auction for $17. it graded MS62 at PCGS.

Keets, Is this thread not a "Man-Oh- Man" type thread??? image

it's actually a very good thread. i'm not trying to say that i know much about these 3CN's, certainly guys like DPoole could run circles around me, but from looking at coins trying to find a nice type piece i learned alot, and became amazed at how much i like the design. some coins show the clash so strong it's incredible and is a testimony to the quality of the die steel used so long ago. the trick with the series is in finding a pleasantly toned specimen. i suspect that a high number have been dipped and considering the low number of coins for some of the years(especially the Proofs) that could mean most of the coins that still exist.
