Home Metal Detecting

My first time out

Well, after 6 months of having a DFX, I finally had some time to go out. I thought I would have a lot more time when I purchased the detector but boy was I way wrong.

Anyway, I went out to a local beach on a military base and did about an hour of detecting just for kicks. I think I picked up a dime and two pennies, all from the 1980's. I am going to start doing more research on where might be a good place to detect and ask my grandfather if I can hunt his land. He owns a lot of land due south of gettysburgh and apparently the confederate solders crossed over his land a lot.

One question I had though. I found a lot of junk, like old cans, wire, and foil, should I pick that up and throw it away? I would assume that is just good housekeeping and good for the hobby, but does everyone out there clean as they go?

  • welcome! I search alot of beaches in ct & find lots of junk. i look at it as plus, i get to clean up as i go. I also get to explain to my two boys 4 & 6 not litter. keep our world clean! good luck sounds like a great spot to search:cakeimage
  • I tend to hunt the same beach every week or two. I do not want to find the SAME junk/trash again!
So I put the junk/trash into a trash can as I pass them. Same thing in tot lots.

    Good Luck

Clean as you go... just the right thing to do... Cheers, RickO
  • I agree with most here, and I think you'll find it universal...pick up the trash. A MD'ist always removes more trash than goodies....Keep the trend going.

my theory is take all the "junk" home with you, you never know what you could overlook while out, sitting down and re inspecting what you found can sometimes be worth its weight in gold image
I'd rather be driving a titleist
