23k for a PCGS MS65 FE cent??

From the just completed Heritage sale - wow!

The spot doesn't show up in the natural color Heritage photos where the coin looks like an average MS 65. The coin doesn't seem to have great eye appeal, for whatever the Heritage photos are worth. Not a proof, so what's up, the emotions of an auction??
<< <i>My first thought was that it looks like I what I would think a proof looks like but I don't know the diagnostics, anycase the price paid is indicative of proof. >>
It also brought what MS-66's in PCGS have been bringing. Not a proof imho, just a coin someone thinks has a very good shot at upgrading.
This imo is a great illustration what happens when one gets buried in a coin. Whenever there is a huge chasm between what a coin brings in one grade versus the next one, I think it's a major mistake (I am trying to be kind here) to pay many multiples of sheet and play the grading game, hoping that you can get your money out of the coin because you think the coin is attractive.
Doug, with no disrespect to you or the "informed purchaser" of this coin, unless it's some sort of variety which I know nothing about, it seems to me that the purchaser made up his mind that for whatever reason, he wanted that coin and did not care what he had to pay for it.
I paid $3,100 for a 58 LL in PC 5 a few years ago, and it's solid for the grade. I don't think these have gone up much since then.

You are right about 58LL's in MS65. However, there are some crazy money guys playing in the high grade FE & IHC's right now. I've been shocked at what they have been willing to pay. The last two 58LL's in MS66 have gone for over 20k, with Lakesamm's going for 25k. Historical prices for 66's have been around $10k. I'm sure there are going to be some record IHC prices coming up at Baltimore too.
