What location and type of detecting will make a big defference in what you need.
In 1990 I went top of the line White's Eagle for about $800.00 Dollars. That detector can still hunt side by side with today's White's TOP OF THE LINE "DFX" $1100.00 Dollar detector.
E-Bay---Eagle II SL 90 around $300 to $400 Dollars used. E-Bay---DFX Around $600 to $800 Dollars used.
Since you mentioned water and sand (I'm assuming beach), you might check out the Minelab Excalibur II which will set you back about 1200. Visit the Kellyco website where they always have special package deals.
i've owned around 6 Whites detectors. i had a whites eagle2. very good detector, i had alot of success with that one. i've stuck with whites, cause they offer the option of tone ID or not. i believe minelab only uses tone ID, which drives me crazy. i got a DFX from another forum, for $900. you can try this forum: findmall
