Loving Cards one day - Never want to look at another card the next??

Sitting around busting some wax... 1st few packs i am looking at every card enjoying the process.. By the end of the box I am literally ripping the packs and throwing commons in the garbage instead of in monster boxes like usual.

One day I will enjoy listing and get like 500 cards done in a few hours, then for 4 days in a row I wont be able to list more then 5 cards at a time because I find in so boring.

One day I am surfing ebay for hours, then for a few days I have zero interest in even checking items I am watching.

Even when I was a kid collecting, my interests would change every week. One day I want only inserts, the next day I want a complete run of topps sets, the next day I want to collect starting lineups and sell all my cards, the next day I only want to collect wax boxes.

Do you guys go through this too?

It is harder each day to get motivated to list collectibles for sale.

I would love to get 500 cards listed in a couple hours. I can relate exactly to everything you said. Sometimes I get the feeling of inpending doom that all of my cards might soon become worthless, but then I sell a few on ebay and feel better. Such is life.

That's so true. Just last night I was going through some cards; setting aside the cards worth sending to WANNA GO RIDE BIKES?

Its all depends what mood I am in. Some days I want to finish up my modren sets, then next start start my Kellog set. I not a huge ebayer other than just browse for awhile. Everyone goes through trends.
  • I think everyone that sells on Ebay has those days where they look at the Turbo Lister screen and say man I really hate this part. I try to list 10 to 12 items a day and sometimes it seems like even that is a daunting task.

Yes. I get bored from time to time and swear I'm going to sell it all. Then I go to a show or get online and find a really nice card and I'm hooked again.

I also collect vintage automobiles and from time to time shift my interests in that direction. That's what I'm doing right now and will be selling some cards over the next couple months to buy another vehicle.

Cards are an escape for me so it never really gets old, but I do feel that way about poker sometimes. Sometimes when the cards are running good I have to force myself to play more hours even though my heart isn't in it.

I find that I get sidetracked sometimes. Lately I have been car shopping so I find a lot of my free time is spent on car websites. However, that will pass and then I will be back to cards.

  • I never get tired of collecting, because I always find new projects for myself (current ones are 1955 Bowman FB and 1956 Topps FB, with 1962 Topps FB lined up after that), but listing my extra stuff for sale on Ebay is really tedious....

This is the God's truth. I've got boxes upon boxes of cards that keep intended to list (huge piles of refractors, serial numbered cards, enormous player lots, etc), but every night I find some other way to spend my evening hours. I've also got about 550 cards at PSA, and I'm just dreading their return. If someone would cash me out for six grand right now I would take it in a millisecond, even though that figure is about $1000 or so less than what all of this crap will sell for.

I'm bored with Ebay-- it's no longer entertaining. Everything is overgraded, or in some other way misrepresented, and buyers keep getting more obnoxious. It's been five weeks since I even initiated a search, and three weeks since I logged into my account, and I don't see that changing until I get my cards back from PSA.

After getting in disappointing cards (e.g. trimmed) and having to deal with ripoff artists who can't possibly understand how this could have happened I get sick of it too. The nice stuff (and the nice people) keep me in though.

That said, it sure sounds like a business opportunity for somebody to sell everybody else's stuff. PreWarCardCollector does a nice business - I've thought about sending him my "sooner or later ebay pile".

I hit times where I don't feel like collecting much. Even though I don't spend income that is used to support my family I sometimes feel a little guilty spending a few grand on cards a year. I think of other things I could be do with my money. What makes me feel better is that I also know there are a lot worse things I can do with my money. I just hope my son or daughter gain an appreciation for collecting as it has brought me a lot of joy through the years.

Sometimes I think I just spent $200 on a cardboard piece of paper with a guys picture on it. However, it is hard to put a price on the nostalgic feeling I get when I look through my collection. Also, I enjoy chasing cards down to add to my sets. So it is the love of baseball, the thrill of the chase and the nostalgic feelings of perceived happier times that draws me back in again.
  • The one thing that I always console myself with if the fact that sports cards, unlike my wife's shoes, will always have resale value.

The bargain we have struck is that I get to spend on cards the same amount of $$$ each month that she spends on shoes/clothes. Anything more than that needs to be funded by selling stuff from my collection.

Not day to day but season to season. For example, I would do a lot up until December but then I would have to take 2-3 months off. I can't get into cards with any enthusiasm during the winter months.
  • Ah, the journey!

I do find that I'm more distracted by these boards than anything else. For instance, I should be editing and rewriting a 30-page paper for my master's program. That's what my wife thinks I'm doing right now. But what I'm really doing is spending a tremendous amount of time trying to work trades with fellow board members and find good deals on ebay.

Oh, I look at naked girls on naughty web-sites, too.

    Cheers, fellas.

sounds like bi-polar to me, but maybe it's just life. Only a robot really does the same thing each day.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
