And as far as modern base, I think any of these are worth owning in a 10...

    1982 ripken
    1983 gwynn
    1987 donruss maddux

There are 10 Henderson PSA 10's, which definitely makes it MUCH more rare than the Ripken, Gwynn and Maddux RCs.

With 8,000+ graded I assume baseball collectors are aware that the card is super tough in PSA 10 for whatever reason. Which means its probably pretty unlikely that 4SC is pumping out PSA 10's of this card on a weekly basis...There are well over 1,000 PSA 9's, so whatever this card sells for in PSA 10 is probably justified.

    thanks...

Checking vcp, a bargain at $4K+, especially when 9's go for a couple bills....which confirms what i was trying to state.
Those with the deep pockets wouldn't even want an 8 in their collection...they would prefer not to have anything than an 8, especially when 9s are so plentiful and cheap....

The other 3 you listed are inexpensive and all have POPs over 100 in PSA 10..Not sure how those even fall anywhere near the same category as the Ricky Henderson RC...I don't own a single baseball card so I was just going off your post and I assumed you were putting like items together..lol..I had no idea Henderson was so rare/expensive.

How do the other 3 cards compare to it?

A PSA 10 Ripken just sold for over $2K...
All I am trying to say is that one shouldn't generalize in their use of words like "ALL, NONE, etc..."
Also, that in "MOST" (note-didn't use the word all) cases, it is usually best to buy the highest grade within your budget to optimize your potential for growith. If one does not care if their cards values depreciate, or that they don't mind that they collect something that 10,000 others have in the same grade (or even raw for that matter), then sure, collect whatever you enjoy. You need to decide what your goals are. There are clearly distinctly different types of collectors, and whatever makes you happy is all that matters.
  • Back on topic, as in my first post...

Most of the PSA 10's he is selling are commons, that will have little potential for growth due to low demand (IMO)...and the only logical reason i could see him piggy-backing the same cards are that they may be consignments.

Agreed, 100%...If you aren't happy to own a card, and prices falling really bothers you or hurts you in the pocketbook you are probably in the wrong game.

Also, I've never known or heard of 4SC doing consignments. They have to submit a minimum number of cards to PSA each month in order to get the grading price they get. Back when you could see other peoples submissions, it was easy to guess the 4SC ones. When it was 80's/90's stuff, they'd have a bunch of M/G (minimum grade) listings that never got slabbed, and everything else on the sub was PSA 9 or 10. They send in thousands of cards a month and have to move product in order to keep their inventory liquid. Slow release of like cards just isn't in their business model as stated earlier in this thread.

The question I always had was how did they get their PSA shipments back so quickly. They would have a sub pop on say June 4th and the card would be scanned and listed on ebay by the 7th. This was verified by matching cert#s on the sub vs. the scan in their listings.

I wouldn't necessarily say the "wrong" game, i would say a different game. I, as many others, prefer to collect cards that match a certain criteria...

    1. desirability
    2. belief that the card will retain it's value or increase, or minimally not depreciate by "too much".

Example, I have no desire to collect a card that i never heard of the player or who's stat's are "crappy".
I am not going to suggest that set collectors are in the "wrong" game, just a different game.
Every body has a purpose of collecting what they collect, and most collectors change what they collect over the couse of time.
As long as one enjoys collecting what they do collect, that is all that matters.

There is no "wrong" game of collecting, provided it doesn't interfere with your loved ones or your finances.

Anyone ever think that 4SC HELPS the value of PSA 10s??? Sure they could. Keeping interest and availability alive. They are a match made in Registry heaven.
