Metal Detector: What would you not only recommend but what would you buy, if you had to do it all ov

This Board has the best metal finders in the world as members.

I've been lurking here when not over at the US Coin Forum.

I am here to avoid the common mistakes of a first purchase, but I want to get the best equipment to do it right.

Like anything, I know there are nuances that must be learned, but I'm a quick study.

So, if you knew what you know now, back then....what would you get to do it right?

I humbly thank you all who answer....

What location and type of detecting will make a big defference in what you need.

In 1990 I went top of the line White's Eagle for about $800.00 Dollars. That detector can still hunt side by side with today's White's TOP OF THE LINE "DFX" $1100.00 Dollar detector.

E-Bay---Eagle II SL 90 around $300 to $400 Dollars used.
    E-Bay---DFX Around $600 to $800 Dollars used.

    Good Luck

Listen to Jerry...and do the research he has given you... There are all sorts of machines out there.. and more coming. So much depends on what you are hunting for, where, how much you will invest.. both dollars and time. Keep asking questions... good luck. Cheers, RickO

The only thing I would say is don't waste your time with a "decent" detector that you'll be wanting to upgrade in a year. Buy the best you can afford; you may have it for 10, 15 years.

Everyone is different as are their situations. There are different types of hunters and hunting proximities. Beach/water vs land, relic vs coin or jewelry. How much time is going to be devoted to this recreation? What is the individual's financial situation? As in coin collecting, I have seen people buy the perceived best and for one reason or another, the returns weren't as expected. They are turned off and sell at a significant loss, never to return again. If you're only going to hunt two or three times a year, then an inexpensive model would be fine. I don't golf much, so renting clubs when I go is fine because my expectations aren't overly high. I do like detecting, so I finally bought my equivalent of the Ping clubs. That's not for everyone. There's also brand loyalty. You want to see a bunch of nerds get ugly? Go to a detecting forum and watch these guys puff out their chests with regards to which detector to buy. Quite humorous really.

I have to agree with the idea of researching. The internet provides many wonderful resources. Just be careful of where you look. Who is sponsoring the site that you're getting your information from? Think PCGS vs NGC. Hope this helps. image

  • Well....going by how the question was asked...I would recommend a Garrett Ace or better...If I had it to do all over again....I would still buy the Garrett Gti 2500...
