1897-O lower grade VAM2 or VAM6A? (more photos and weight)

Hi,

I've had a few people ask me concerning this auction so, I ended it early and reposted it, and mentioned it was a VAM2, with the "O" tilted right.

But now of course I'm taking another look and I'm wondering if it's a VAM 5, with the O set high and tilted... anyone out there with better eyes than me?

I know it's a lower grade VAM but, I want to be accurate.

VAM World's 1897-page

Thanks in advance!
Anthony

Unlisted. In my opinion, this is a counterfeit, sorry..

thats definitely possible, it looks like it might have been struck privately from cancelled dies.

I had a large cent the same way, actually a cut that looks like a break or cancel

  • Sure looks like canceled dies to me. BTW, I think they were once for the VAM 6A.

  • Hummmm... interesting opinions, I added some opinions to the description and a close up of the date too.

Another wrote to me saying it could be an unlisted VAM.

It is the only Morgan I have with that X across the front and back, I was wondering about that.... could have been a cancel from a VAM 6A die.

    THANKS!

Not a cancel. They just don't look like that.

Here's a cancelled die example, they leave no doubt.

  • Hi,

I checked into the coins weight, as I do with Ancients, the exact weight of a Morgan dollar is 26.73 grams or rounded up to 27 g... the coin weights 27 grams on my scale, as do a few other Morgans I picked at random, none of which have the X across the front. (yes, I wish I had a to the hundredths scale)

The coin is also the same thickness and size as the other Morgans.

I also see that a cancel is really a deep X through the coin, thanks.

So, do we think it could still be counterfeit, a VAM6a (it has the near date and tiled high “O”), definitely not from canceled dies, or still not sure?

If I can get a consensus, I could edit the auction accordingly, instead of all the “or” and “perhaps” statements… which are confusing.

Thanks again for all the input!,

  • Really dumb question that I have zero knowledge of. Could someone fill a canceled die and use it or attempt to? The X on both side look to perfect to be an error.
