IKE/Eisenhower History

drei3reedrei3ree Posts: 3,430 ✭✭✭✭
Hello -- I'm new to the IKEs and would like to know if there is a good web link to a detailed history? I've read several of the "standard" versions, but they all seem to be the same? Maybe there isn't much more to say...

Thank You

  • Dwight David Eisenhower (October 14, 1890 – March 28, 1969), nicknamed "Ike", was a General of the Army (five star general) in the United States Army and U.S. politician, who served as the thirty-fourth President of the United States (1953–1961). During the Second World War, he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe, with responsibility for planning and supervising the successful invasion of France and Germany in 1944–45. I have found power in the mysteries of thought.

It is always a question of knowing and seeing, and not that of believing.

Our virtues, and our failings are inseparable, like force, and matter. When they separate, man is no more.

    Welcome aboard.

You might try typing "Ike" in the search box at the top of the threads page
and see what comes up. We've had quite a few threads on the subject.

Any specific question might be best addressed in one of those threads.

This thread had a very interesting perspective on the reverse design for the IKE. Real story behind the IKE reverse design

    Wow! Welcome IKE enthusiast!

For a good history on the creation of this dollar coin, you might want to consider picking up a copy of the Authoritative Reference on Eisenhower Dollar. They just had a recent reprint of this 1998 book so you'll need to ask around to see if someone can order one for you. eBay is a good alternative as they do come up for sale every now and again.

When searching for IKE of the forums threads, key in spaceIKEspace for your search argument or else you'll not only dig up IKE threads but all the threads with the word "like" as well.

    Again Welcome aboard!

  • It might be worth searching also for "blank IKES" as well as "blank IKE blank." There are posts that used the plural.

I like Ikes, but the coin doesn't do justice to the man. A truly remarkable American hero.

The Ike dollar was the 20th Centuries later equivalent of the Peace Dollar, except for Ike's flowing hair is not quite the same length. A well struck Ike in prime condition is a beautiful coin, but just like the Peace Dollar with its large fields and at times weak strikes is not a very forgiving coin.

Most websites will omit the fact that Ike enjoyed hot pastrami for breakfast.

Welcome to the forum.. enjoy... Cheers, RickO
  • Dennis, there is a little hard-cover book called "Eisenhower, the Man, the Coin and the Stamp", Thomas Becker, published in 1971. You may be able to borrow it from the ANA Library or arrange an inter-library loan through your local library.

Short and sweet, it ties together Ike's remarkable carreer and Gasparro's veneration of the man he eventually had the opportunity to place on the new Dollar coin. Rob

This is the A-number-One reason that the IKE Dollar gets no respect coupled with the fact that its a Copper Nickel Clad coin!

Ratty examples are all over the place and all thats ever seen so its no wonder folks constantly diss the coin as "ugly"! A well struck, high grade version is truely a beautiful looking coin to view. Those wide open fields pass some extremely pleasing mint luster and finding one that does so can be an interesting experience!
