Wow! This ebay coin dealer felt it was his duty to give me his opinion

I have some items for sale. So to save people trouble of searching, (some haven't been listed in a long time) I put the PCGS price of the coins. They are PCGS after all. Most people who buy/sell these know some prices are high, some low, some right on. Anyway, here is his question (rant acually):

" Q: Do you honestly believe those FAIRY TALE prices that PCGS puts up at their site????? PCGS is OWNED by several member of the PCG (Professional Coin Guild) and it is in their VERY BEST INTERESTS to con potential buyers that the coins they are seller (and grading) are worth about 1000 times what they are actually worth. The PCGS PRICE GUIDE at their site is about the MOST RIDICULOUS PRICE LIST I HAVE EVER SEEN. For example, the current BLUE SHEET lists a Silver Proof Conneticut Quarter in PROOF 70 at 22.00. That is what this quarter is seller for between DEALERS. Look at the ridiculous price that PCGS lists for the same coin. 22.00 is what their PCG members are willing to pay for it but they WOULD SUGGEST that it is REALLY WORTH 2,000.00. THIS IS PURE UTTER GARBAGE!! "

WTF? I obviously touched a nerve. That took a while to type. If you don't like my price, don't buy it.
I like PCGS coins. They are the only ones I have ever had that I at least broke even when I sold.
If i sold everything I've listed with "Best Offer", I would break even or worse.

I rather doubt that 1999-S PCGS Silver Proof Connecticut PR70DCAM sells for $22 dealer to dealer. My own experience (as a collector) with Blue Sheet was that is was not anywere close to to what I saw in actual sales anywhere. Grey Sheet was good for raw coins. Experts, please correct me if I am wrong.

You're not wrong. You just found some kook on eBay who had a bad experience with a PCGS coin or coins. He now sits in his basement and rips on people through his computer. You can list your coins for whatever you think they're worth and hopefully someone agrees with you.

I've often paid well over PCGS guide (and any other guide) for quality pieces. The guy who questioned you is just a dumba$$.

That $22 price is for those dealers that do not want to deal with state quarters. Call a real dealer of moderns like wondercoin or Modern Coin Mart and you would get a heck of a lot more for it in a PCGS 70 holder. Maybe a small fraction in anyone else's holder.

I've never seen a silver proof 1999 quarter for less than $50...raw or otherwise.

How can I join the "Professional Coin Guild?"

I am already a member of the "Professional Numismatists Guild" and the "Numismatic Literary Guild," but joining the "Professional Coin Guild" would really guild the lily!!!!!!

  • Silver proof Connecticut Quarters don't appear in the Bluesheet that I am aware of. I'll pay $55 for such a coin.

Yes, there are rude and inconsiderate eBayers everywhere. There are also nice, polite ones too. I once got a message from an eBayer that had the gall to charge me with shill bidding when I was not. When I looked at the bid history, indeed, there was someone who was upping it $50 once a day but this person was not an alter ego of mine and they didn't end up being one of the top 2 bidders from what I can remember.

Then there's the guys who are all humble and mention how they hope they aren't an inconvenience to you and then they ask a simple question.

Never would I know such a range of manners in people existed were it not for the wonderful world of eBay.

Regarding the PCGS price guide and debacles, I do have one of my own. An eBayer made what they thought was a fair offer on a common date Morgan Dollar PCGS MS62DMPL. They cited the PCGS price guide of $40 or $60 or whatever it is and wondered why I countered with $90. Then I explain to them the PCGS price guide is undervaluing this coin and of course they don't believe me and they accuse me of knowing more than the guys at PCGS who priced it and that we'll see if it really sells at my $90. A couple hours later someone else accepted a counteroffer of mine for $90.

So, yes, PCGS price guide does undervalue certain PCGS graded coins.

So don't worry about this one eBayer's rant. Because when it comes to rude eBayers they are a dime a dozen. Just laugh and move on.

The guy's out of line. No call for that kind of email. He's just frustrated by the enormous difference in price cited in the PCGS Price Guide for many coins.

    NGC's numismedia.com shows a $250 FMV for this '99-S Silver CT PR70 DCAM qtr. PCGS says $2,000.

    Look at a '56-D Lincoln, MS67. PCGS price = $4350. NGC = $281.25

There are hundreds more that are very disparate.

PCGS is tougher on moderns and copper and I much prefer them, all else being equal. But I won't pay 10 or 20 times as much.
  • I had about 25 coins cancelled on Ebay for including my PCGS price guide in my description for PCGS coins I had listed. I did not know that was a rule. I have been listing for 6 years the same way. The disgruntled person that emailed you might have been the one that turned my auctions in to Ebay. I looked at it as a service to the buyers to where they did not have to research the price themselves. image

I have come across this on a number of occasions even at shows. I asked one dealer to see his PCGS Morgans, and he went off on how I was cherry picking him and mumbled something as he turned around making like he was looking for other coins. Then told me he forgot them and did not bring them with him, Another lady dealer at the same show ripped me a new one because in her words " I pray at the alter of the PCGS gods"

I only asked to see what Morgans they had in PCGS. I had 3 grand in my pocket. They never say a penny of it.

When I get this kind of response from someone on line/ Ebay I simply write them back and say thanks for your opinion, I have now blocked you.

You can quote the PCGS price guide for your PCGS graded coins, but you are required to have a front & back scan of the actual coin up for auction....

I don't think these guys are trying to talk you down. They're just frustrated and venting. They are pretty sure you won't come down from $2000 to $22. I currently have an offer in my ebay inbasket on a $2799 set for $28. I didn't even bother to reply since once I counter he can submit another low offer and I didn't want to take the time to block him. --Jerry
