QDB has me in a frenzy over this secret August 9th event in Wolfeboro, NH. Anyone know what it is?
I was reading the latest issue of Dave's Notes on the Stack's site, and I saw the following excerpt. I am in a frenzy over this reference to August 9th, because I have no idea what this big event is (could it be QDB's birthday?). Does anyone know what this event is? I am within driving distance to Wolfeboro, so I can plan on being at this event, assuming that it is big and important enough. Any thoughts?
Here is the excerpt:
"On Saturday, August 9th, a special numismatic event will take place in New Hampshire. It doesn't involve buying or selling, but it does involve Stack's (among others) as a sponsor. Watch for further announcements, but in the meantime you might want to mark this on your calendar as a "maybe" event-that is, if New Hampshire is a day trip possibility for you."

They would never compete with the Longacre sticker.

My first thought was that Stack's would do one better and actually slab and grade coins.

That would actually involve buying machinery to make the shells and seal them. It's far easier to second guess an already establish grading company and there is no worry concerning grading and authentication guarantees.

chuckles, snicker, chortle...the words were written on the inside cover of the QDB book I just received!
Probably they are going to announce the hiring of Longacre as their CIO (chief inquisition officer) and Longacre is just being coy
If it is a really cool event I would need to book another night or two on the way home.
I wonder if it is a dinner / boat ride on the lake?

Bowers, Q. David. A California Gold Rush History, 2002. The Deluxe Leatherbound Edition, number 400 of 400 produced.
As new. Folio, 14" x 11" x 2¾". Bound in full leather with pictorial boards decorated in gilt. The S.S. Central America is depicted at center of front board, fancy gilt flourishes at corners incorporate a crossed pick and shovel, spine decorated in gilt with depictions of the ship, the obverse of an 1857-S $20, assayer's scales, and a crossed pick and shovel. Numbered in gilt at interior base of rear board, endpapers depict a mining scene, front endpapers include a pinch of "authentic gold dust from the S.S. Central America" protected behind plastic in the miner's pan of the illustrated scene-a nice touch, inspired by the 1849 second edition of the 1842 A Manual of Gold and Silver Coins of All Nations and the 1850 New Varieties of Gold and Silver Coins by Jacob R. Eckfeldt and William E. DuBois of the Philadelphia Mint, works which included a specimen of California gold dust behind a mica window. This edition was never sold publicly but was only available with the purchase of an ingot from the wreck-an expensive proposition and one that leaves the vast majority of copies in the hands of the original owners who retain their ingots. This edition cost nearly $1,000 per copy to produce and it is not included as a variant in the excellent and expansive Bibliography of Sunken Treasure books by David S. Crooks. This is a rare opportunity as this particular limited leatherbound deluxe edition happens to be the very last copy made for one of the most impressive productions in American numismatic literature.
This record price means the restrike gold ingot is a real bargain at $1,200 based on the original cost.
Edited to add - Yes,the Kellogg $50's made from transfer dies using the SSCA gold
<< <i>If I recall correctly, the SSCA ingot and deluxe California Gold Rush book package was marketed at $5K.

Are you talking about the $50 Kellogg and Co gold coin restrike? If so, where can I buy one for $1200 which is below melt?

and not enough substance.
It was an amazing movie about all the sculptures that he made and briefly touched about the coins he designed. The Shaw memorial is an awesome piece i would love to see sometime. I may have to make a trip over to Cornish, NH to see the St Gaudens Historical site.
I got to meet both David Bowers and David Sundman. And it was a fun evening. I took my son and one of our 4 foster children.
We were given hardcover editions of the 2009 Redbook & a book titled "Striking Coinage" by Michael Moran. So all in all we had a good time and got to meet a few fellow collector
NH Public Television just aired the movie this past weekend and PBS is suppose to be picking it up sometime soon.
Now you have me wondering what it is, as I live about 20 minutes from Wolfeboro.
I knew it would happen.
<< <i>I think I found a CLUE for you.
QDB doing Karaoke. Oh my. It intrigues me and repels me at the same time. One thing is for sure, it's probably not like anything I've ever seen before........
