short coin show report-pasadena ca.

As we all do when traveling , I looked up coin shops in the LA area .
Found quite a few , but being on vacation , I also wanted to go places
and do things . Lo and behold , there it was - a 3 day coinshow may 16-17-18
at the Pasadena Hilton ! Wife drops me off to shop mall for about an hour .
Well, I finished before she did . About 12 tables , of which one was supplies ,
two jewelry , about three stamps , the others mixed paper and or coin .
Damage control : two foreign paper notes for personnal collection ($20)
One barber quarter for resale($26) , two frosty Heineken while waiting for
ride , ($10) . From web site of shows (www.bick.net) , I expected more .
But then , I had ample cash for wine tasting !!

I went to this one too as it's w/in a half hour from me. Was definitely smaller than I would have expected, especially when a few of the tables were practically selling trash. One table did have some very cool old certified southern gold though. Don't get to see that much in person. Didn't end up buying anything which is sort of good as now I have more $$ for the BST forum and for the upcoming Long Beach show which I hear is a little bigger than this one.

12 tables would almost make me feel like I was in a large B&M store.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

  • I drove from San Diego to Pasadena for this show once (not this particular one, however) and stayed for maybe 10 minutes. I've been to a few Israel Bick shows, but now I avoid them and consider them a waste of time.

from the description, sounds like actually just 6 tables of coins...but if you need a show, you need a show!

  • Last time I was there I bought 3 coins. All three sent to PCGS. 2 cleaned and one came back MS-62 and was sold as 63 (my fault I know). That was a $1,600 loss. My biggest mistake ever. Needless to say I never got the urge to make the trek again.

I don't attend local shows any longer. I went to one ten years ago. I saw very little material there worth mentioning. There was this one weird old guy, though, who was selling Nazi war medals. Judging from his demeanor, it appeared that he had earned them during the War.

I was told that about up to 8-10 years ago, the Pasadena show was a great one with lots of dealers and quality stuff, but that it's massively declined to what it is now.

I was planning on going to the Pasadena show 3 years ago when I still lived in the area, but was talked out of it and went to a local shop instead.
