4766th Post Giveaway - Copy Stand - WINNER IN LAST POST

messydeskmessydesk Posts: 20,431 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yep, I'm giving away a copy stand to commemorate my 4766th post. Why the unconventional cardinality commemoration? Mockery of many modern commems, I guess. Or maybe I just don't use it anymore and would like someone else to benefit from it.

Anywho, here's a picture of the prize:

image

Camera not included, and shown only to illustrate scale of copy stand. Someone made this for me a few years ago, and since my main camera now is a Nikon D80, this copy stand is no longer suitable for my purposes. It works fine for a pocket camera. The base is 9x12 inches and the camera is about 11-12 inches above the base in the picture. It disassembles quickly with a screwdriver and comes with a base from a broken tripod that holds the camera nicely.

The rules for this giveaway are complicated. You may enter by merely replying to this thread, but such entries will be entered in a "second chance" drawing. To be entered in the "first dibs" contest, you must suggest to me what my next coin purchase should be, down to the grade. The person that posts the coin I agree with the most will win. In the event that I don't like any of the suggestions enough to declare a winner, those who suggested a coin will be given two entries each in the second chance drawing that will include all those who entered without suggesting a coin. The winner will be selected Friday afternoon, so that I can get their address and ship the copy stand before leaving town on Saturday.

    As for your next coin purchase, gold is always good. I'd look at a nice $5 Indian... a first year S mint in MS62, in a PCGS holder, of course!image

    Please don't enter me in this wonderful give away, I also have a DSLR.

    Just wanted to chime in that I like that idea for jury rigging a stand. That looks like it was made out of an old filing cabinet. image

    I'm going to suggest getting a Classic Commemorative.
    To be specific I recommend getting an MS63 Illinois Centennial. (from your home state by the way)
    Also would be your personal tribute to 100 years of Lincoln cents.
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Please enter me, but should I win, add this to the Broadstruck giveaway. MGoodman added a camera into it and this would be helpful to the YN with a new camera.

    As for a coin, how about a 1853 No arrows Liberty Seated dime in AU 55-58 PCGS Graded.

    You should buy a 1934-D Vam 4 Peace $ in a unattributed PCGS AU58 holder that looks MS-64 except for a small rub.

    And thank you for the copy stand! image

    I think a PCGS holdered 1838 Classic Head, gold $5.00 Half Eagle, in either a P, C, or D mint, depending on your budget, would be a classy addition to your collection. image

    Congratulations and thanks for the opportunity to win.

  • Your next puchase will be an 1889-O oval O in raw AU. Saturday at 11:23am you will walk into a store that is not known for coins with your wife, looking for decorations for the new kitchen she is about to ask you for. You will notice a couple Morgans in a display case and ask if they have more, the person behind the counter will pull out a 2 boxes of 2x2s and you will find 6 coins you will cherry pick the last being the 1889-O oval O in AU. Total cost for the 6 coins will be $120 plus tax. On the way home you will stop for an ice cream and try a new flavor. When you arrive home you will notice that your dog pee'd on your favorite oriental rug and tore apart the garbage because you forgot to feed it before you left.

    BTW, sorry for your day going the way it's about to go. Thanks for the chance.

  • I just had another vision. Your next purchase will be:

    Round and shiney, possibly toned;
    It will be made of metal and copper, silver or golden in color;
    May or may not be incased in plastic, cardboard or lucite;
    It will be dated, that I am sure of;
    It may or may not have one of the following mintmarks D, S, CC, O, W, P

    Ok, since I'm a mind reader too, I'll stop. You don't have to think that thought twice, but please refrain from refering to me in that language in the future. I'll know about it image

    This was an interesting contest, actually. Many sound suggestions, some in line with what I tend to buy and some outside my normal realm. Coins in both categories were likely posted with my main collecting interests in mind, or then maybe not. Some coins posted I already have. One I used to have image

    The finalists were:
    - sparky64 with the Lincoln commem in 63
    - jmj3esq with the Gettysburg in 65
    - illini420 with the Lincoln commem in 65
    - prooflike with the 1917 25c in 64FH
    - thisnamztaken with an 1838 $5, grade unspecified

    I then looked on my desk and realized I need to make a payment this week for my daughter's band trip to Hawaii next year and decided sparky64 was closest. I will pursue a Lincoln in 64, however, not 63, based on the bang-for-the-buck quotient, which is defined as follows:

    BBQ[g] = (P[g+1] - P[g]) / (P[g] - P[g-1]), where g represents a grade level and P[g] the price of the coin at that grade level. If I use the PCGS price guide in this calculation, BBQ[63] = 24, BBQ[64] = 2.17, and BBQ[65] = 1.19. If I use recent sales from Heritage, however, BBQ[63] = 1.7, BBQ[64] = 3, and BBQ[65] = 2.1.

    Now, sparky64 may have thought he was buttering me up with the whole "home state" thing. That could have been a fatal mistake. My home state is Wisconsin, I've just lived in Illinois for the past 20 years. Anyway, sparky64 can PM me his/her mailing address and I'll get the prize out post haste. I'll probably have a contest like this again sometime, and probably lean more toward a coin outside my comfort zone.
  • Nice choice,and may you have good luck in your search for that 64
  • sparky64sparky64 Posts: 7,048 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Great!
    I don't have a copy stand and look forward to putting it to use.
    Thanks messydesk that was a lot of fun.
    PM sent.
