Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

I am thinking of putting a new collection together - please helpl...

I want to create a collection of cards/memorabilia that relate to the "MAJOR" events in the history of the sport...
How many can we find...

I was thinking something from the cincinati redstocking to start it, and ending with the steroid era...i cant think of any major history event after steroids? Perhaps once Maddux winning 355 passing clemens would be worthy...

Help me fill out everything else in between...here's a couple to start

I will edit the list as I find worthy added...

cy young 511 wins
Rogers Hornsby first triple crown (in 14 player team, will consider all other triple crowns later)
babe ruths most celebrated player and 60HR
gehrigs speech and consecutive games
jackie robinson breaks the color barrier
dimaggio hit streak
mays catch
Teddy's .400 season
mantles longest homerun
maris 61 HR
Lou Brock stolen base record
pete rose all time hits
nolans strikeout record
Ron Bloomberg first DH
aaron HR record
ripkens consecutive games
Frank Robinson first black manager
Rickey captures stolen base record
sosa/mcgwire homerun race
griffey youngest to 500HR
sox beat the babes curse and win the ws 2004
canseco reveals steroid usage

Williams hits over .400 and gets ignored, first by MVP voters, and now by you. I guess it's just too easy to hit .400

    Maris hits his 61st homer.

ooops did not see that Mike had that one.

    Catfish Hunter free agency?

Wow - this would almost be too much to handle?

Where do you start and stop?

All 500, 3000 and 300 milestones are key to baseball with or without mention of steroids.

    Great plays or bloops?

E.g. Owens passed ball in the '41 WS of game #4 - Dodgers vs. Yankees. And of course - "the Mookie" ball!

This is a great idea but also IMO a big one.

For the purpose of this collection, I don't want all the milestones, just maybe the record and record beat...(ie gehrig and ripken, cobb and rose)... This is not to say i don't have their cards or dont want them in my collection, i just want the biggest of the big for this subset, really wanting to keep to 100 or less...

Nick: I was pretty sure williams .406 was one of his triple crown years, but I was wrong. Did you know that Williams was not MVP in either of his two triple crown years?

Ron Blomberg was the first DH.
  • You have to include Johnny Vandermeer, the only pitcher to throw back to back no-hitters in the majors.

i would make sure to include Bill Lee breaks record for amount of marijuana smoked by a major leaguer and Steve Lyons becomes first player to drop his pants on the field.

    But seriously...
Perhaps something for Connie Mack being the winningest manager or a card for each of the guys who hit 4HR in a game in that year.
