Type 1... The Type 2 has some opening and a chubby end tail (Correct me if I'm wrong, please).

According to small dollars.com it looks like a Type 1.

Had it been a 79-S, then yes, Type 2.

between one die and another. These tend to primarily be caused by strik-
ing characteristic, of course, but every little difference in dies isn't import-
ant enough to get people interested to call it a variety. This can be seen
on quite a few of the type I '81-S coins (especially quarters).

Your '81-S would probably get attention as a "type III" if anyone cared. It
is pretty common (~10%) and looks a lot like the type I so no one cares.

from what i've seen there are more than just the two MM's referenced by most books and in pictures such as those in the links. the koinpro link shows the one i most often see and associate with Type One and it's very easily recognized. then there are a couple others that don't look like either of the two, but that may just be die state or the progression of the wear as the punch was being used on successive dies. they always have the telltale "points" which look like they connect the ends of the "S" with the center, i just have to look at the MM for more than a glance to be sure. with the Type 2 MM, they are easily recognized.

just last week the local shop owner had a group of about 25-30 Sets that he asked me to double check before he wholesaled them. one had the b ox marked "T2" and it was indeed a Type 2 SBA, but there were also three others in the group. three of the four sets had Type 2 MM's on all six of the coins and the other set was mixed. he was happy and we are both amazed at how often he ends up with set from other dealers that have good SBA's in them. too many dealers are either lazy, uneducated or just insist on trading the sets as commodity and never look at them.

Indeed.

Solid type II sets are pretty elusive but it's the demand for specific
coins that cause some of these to be expensive. These valuable coins
are not that tough in mixed sets.
