Legalities when it comes to metal detecting

What are the property rights legalities when it comes to metal detecting finds? Is it a simple matter of "finders keepers?"

Most finds can be "finders keepers" IF YOU DON"T TELL ANY BODY ;-)

Lots of stuff found...only to have another person/Gov. claim ownership :-(

Jerry is right, basically, you find it, you keep it - if you advertise, someone will claim it. That being said, when we find a ring with name/initials in it, we try to return it. As far as coins go, keep some dug zincolns and or nickles in your pouch. When someone asks 'What did you find?'.. show those. Cheers, RickO

It seems that everyone asks if you found any gold now days. I'm with Ricko. If someone asks what I'm finding I usually just say "alot of pennies and dimes and quarters if I'm lucky". I never give them to much info.

Depends on how old it is. If it has major historical importance, etc... etc.... etc....

I dont tell people if I find gold or silver cause you never know who's looking to bump you on the head and run with your finds.

For the most part i keep what I find. One of the exceptions is if I knowingly know who it belongs to, it gets returned.

I was at the store the other day ago and there was a ten lying on the floor, I picked it up and and looked around to see if anybody was missing money. I asked the

one guy." Excuse me did you lose some money?

He replied , Yes. I said well how much did you lose? He looked at me funny as to be confused and said uhhh .........20 bucks.

He did'nt get the ten and it stayed right in my pocket.

That's when I would have said, "Wrong answer!" and poked him in the eye. "Care to try again?"

Kicking them in the junk is another fun variation of this game... image

You should have said, "Ah well, someone must have already grabbed your other $10!!" image
