Superbox Coin #4: 1855 Red Half Cent (large pics)

DMWJRDMWJR Posts: 5,975 ✭✭✭✭✭
One last one for a while, so I don't spam the boards. Looks like it came right off the press, huh? Again, could have been dipped, but in an OGH, so I am comfortable with the stability. For those not familiar with the issue, the mushiness of the denticles is common on this one. Note the lines in the stars -- they are there.

Thanks for looking. None of these are for sale any time soon. I wanted get them out of the bank and take some photos. I was pretty happy with the photos, so I thought I would share.

Feel free to criticize the coins I post. I don't take it personally. The coins are what they are, nothing more, nothing less.

I have an 1855 Half Dime in which the denticles are not fully stuck. Something about that year.

That's held up pretty well over the past 150 years. Exceptionally nice.

well know that is a great coin. amazing to see so much red.
it just depresses me to know that these coins are so easy to damage
if the previous owners do not take care. alas, copper.

So what causes the mushiness of the denticles? Are they struck with highly worn dies? Just numismatically curious.....

I think you are right about the worn dies. Maybe some experts can enlighten us.

The 1855 Half Cents also almost always come with flat stars and mushy denticles. I think one pair of dies was used until it couldn't be used any longer. I have seen several Large Cents struck in an early die state. They are quite rare (I thought they were PF, initially), but they have full denticles and complete star radials.

I'm no expert, but I believe the weak denticles are caused by die crumbling (wear)...Mike
