Mystery oil

I was thinking this morning that mystery oil might be a good thing to try to soak crusted coins in for a few days as it is a penetrating oil and wondered too if anyone has ever tried it to get the crud off.

Interesting concept.... it may result in very strange discoloration... even if rinsed well. Being a penetrating oil, I would worry that it would attack the surface - however, on coins that are of little numismatic value, it probably would make no difference. Certainly worth an experiment on a few dug coins. Cheers, RickO

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by mystery oil, but grape oil (if you can find it) or olive oil, seems to be the standard for the ancient coin collecting crowd.

Mystery oil is a brand name found in the automotive section of most dept stores. It also is used as an additive for diesel engines. I use it to free rusted parts and it works exceptionaly well if you have the time and patience.

I tried with a similar product (don't have that brand here) some time ago. It worked well but discoloration happened.
