Show off your obscure cards or memorabilia!

One of the coolest things about these forums for me is seeing items that I have not only not seen before, but didn't even know existed. So I thought it might be cool idea to start a thread as a repository of these rarities. If you have an obscure item... regional issues, food issues, test issues... please share them here for all to see! Bonus points will be given for any information you can share about your item(s)*.

I will get the ball rolling with a release I stumbled upon while flipping through the big Beckett and, for some reason, inspired me to put the set together. The 1972 NFL Players Association (NFLPA) Vinyl Stickers. This un-numbered set of 20 measures 2 3/4" x 4 3/4" and was distributed via vending machines in retail stores. It features rookie year releases of Roger Staubach and Jim Plunkett in addition to all-time greats like Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, and Gale Sayers.

image

I look forward to seeing everyone's oddities.

Snorto~

*Bonus points redeemable for a 5 minute suck-face session with Rosie O'Donnell. Canadian residents must successfully complete a mathematical equation to be eligible. Void where prohibited by law.

Distributed in Shotwell candy bars. 24 card set depicting scenes from motion picture starring Red Grange called "One minute to Play" Cards are made of very thin, flimsy paper, thus are very condition sensitive. 2 versions, blank back and print back.

    Good thread snorto!

I'm the only guy on this end of the solar system who seems to collect sports related whiskey decanters - I now have 24!

It all started with this one in 1992 - I was buying a present in an antique store for my wife and asked if she would throw that in to close the deal? She said sure.

This Jim Beam bottle is from a Norman Rockwell painting - which also appeared in the Saturday Evening Post.

  • sold this card recently due to a change in my collecting focus. but was a great card to own! dont see these pop up for sale often.

  • Two of the tougher issues that Winters has. The playing cards were a Coca Cola/White Hen Pantry issue. The RC Cola card is the toughest. If anyone ever finds one please keep me in mind. I will pay very well for one of those.

I'ld like to add this 68T empty wax box.

Got it back around 1993 from a Mark Murphy auction - I tried to pick up the "proof" for it from the Toppsvault but it went for almost 500!!!

The reason I like it so much is Mantle batting.

    Thanx Brian!

Now for the 1924 World Series - The Washington Senators prevailed over the NY Giants in 7 games.

This is the oldest piece of WS memorabilia I have - the scotchtape is a major distraction.

In a lot of cases the cards from a particular issue are relatively hard to find, but some of the other associated items from the set are considerably tougher, and in my opinion, a lot more interesting.
In '34, probably due to the depression, Goudey issued a lot of stuff with their cards. National and American League albums to hold the cards, and you could send away to be a member of Lou Gehrig's Knot Hole League. Here are a few of those items

    The Albums

A wrapper with the Knot Hole League offer:

And the membership card and cloth patch

    imageimage

Each Goudey card in '33 and '34 was registered with the US Patent office. There is only one registration card and corresponding baseball card in existence. Here's the front and back of the '34 reg card for card #2, Mickey Cochrane

I apologize for all the scans - this kind of stuff just gets me crazy! Thanx for indulging me!

Now this is the most butt ugly set I've ever done - the 1952 Baseball Emblem set - I'm still short the Phillies.

    image

It's obviously unnumbered - so what I did - I ordered them by the way they finished the season in 1952 - The Yanks won the WS that year.

    American League

    1. Yanks
    2. Indians
    3. White Sox
    4. Athletics
    5. Senators
    6. Red Sox
    7. Browns
    8. Tigers

    National League

    1. Dodgers
    2. Giants
    3. Cardinals
    4. Phillies
    5. Cubs
    6. Reds
    7. Braves
    8. Pirates

I saw a complete set go up a few years ago - I regret not going for it.

Here are a few Ive shown before on other sites..........
If anyone knows of another example (or more info) of any of these cards/sets please let me know, they are all unique as far as I know.

    image
1933 R309-1 (?) Babe Ruth with unique green borders and green name plaque (back easel is of a different design compared to the R309-1).
green borders make this card 1/2" wider and taller than the common R309-1 Ruth.
This card is an exact match to the "proof" obtained from the Goudey Gum Co., but is the only known production example with the green borders and name plaque (same as the "proof" once owned by Barry Halper)
(this may in fact be one of the mysterious never issued R340 Sport Kings Premiums)

    imageimage
ca.1920's Babe Ruth, obtained in Cuba (thick card stock, blank back, worm hole).
    2-1/2" by 3-3/4"
Originally found tucked into a Spalding Guide formally owned by the premier Cuban baseball historian and author, Severo Nieto.

    image
ca.1941 Kroger Bread card (only example known of any player)
    2" by 3-1/4"

    image
1959 Esslinger Beer Home Run Derby (only known example of any player)

Seeing all of these really cool obscure items made me want to join in on the fun. I'm with Stone, I like memorabilia time threads. image

This first piece is a 1964 Topps Salesman Sample. It's the only one from this year I've ever come across.

This next piece is from the 1952 Atlanta Crackers.

Not sure how obscure these are (I've shown them before) but they don't seem to be something that is readily seen.

This isn't old but it's kind of nice - the kid played football at my high school (a few years after me) and grew up a couple blocks away. He has a little more hair now, plays safety for the Colts

    Stone,

Thanks for the kind words. I love collecting this kind of stuff as much as I do cards. As far as rookies go, the only one I recognized was Chuck Tanner who not only played in the bigs but was the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates during the "We are family" era. The manager of the team was Dixie Walker, which was another name I recognized.

I've mentioned this somewhere on this forum once upon a time but this is probably a good place to show it to everyone. If you don't remember the item itself, you may remember the interview that it led to.

In 1981, Cal Ripken, Jr., was playing for the AAA Rochester Red Wings. To make some extra money, a young guy produced a card set of the wings under the name "WTF Card Company". He was able to get one set per sheet and printed 1800 sheets. Once they were printed he cut 1,750 sheets and left 50 of the sheets uncut to give to friends and to keep for himself. After having the chance to interview the set producer he told me that he believes that only 25 or so have survived. Not exactly sure what will happen to it, but I have offered to loan it to the Ripken museum once it is completed.

I've enjoyed all the stuff you gentlemen have take the time to scan/post - thanx!

Now - if we have any pack rats out there - like myself - this will be understood.

This is the TV guide from the 4th of July - bicentennial week! I saved it - I was in school in NYC at the time - thus the NY sticker.

With a little light steaming, that sticker may just fall right off.

This one definitely puts me in the King of Krap Kamp - can't throw anything away!

BDB, is that Shotwell card stock like newspaper or a more like notebook paper? I have never put my grubby little paws on one of those personally. That Slingin' Sammy matchbook is killer too.

Stone, you just may be the king of the obscure rather than "krap". It is always incredible to see what treasures you have stowed away over the years. That 1968 Topps box is especially cool!

Griffins, any Goudey collector would have to love adding those items to accompany their collection. Those Knot Hole Gang items are phenomenal and I bet most of us indeed never knew they existed.

Perk, I thought the same thing as soon as I saw that Warfield comic... it looks very much like the picture Bowman used for his portrait on their 1950 release. The ads BDB posted for Otto Graham and Crazy Legs Hirsch also look very familiar for the same reason if I am not mistaken.

I really enjoy seeing all these unique oddball items. Keep them coming!

My uncle has 2 seats from the original Yankee stadium that he bought from an older gentleman about 20 years ago , I'm going to E-mail him to see if he could send me some pics . . .

Hell , I should E-mail him and ask him for the seats !

I would put the seats in my living room and watch the Yankee games sitting in the chairs , thinking about how it must have been to watch Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig .

We have a new member who seems to be a Dodger fan - so here goes - I like companion groups:

The 1955 WS - Brooklyn vs the Yanks - the ONLY WS won by the bums in Brooklyn before they "escaped from New York."
