New Here and a Question

Howdy,

I was in my closet the other day and found a duffel bag of coins left to me by my dad. I had long forgotten about them and it was a blast to sit down and go through them. There isn't anything real fancy or rare but still they were his and I enjoy having them. He was disabled and had to limit his purchases to what he could afford with his social security check, which wasn't much. It looks like he liked the state quarters and Lincoln cents. When I was much younger I was interested in coins because I was interested what my dad was interested in, but I never had any money to buy any of my own.

Finding his coins again sparked a crazy coin fetish within me -- reading everything I can and soaking it all in. I think what I will do is work on a complete Lincoln date/mint set business strikes and proofs. That should keep me busy for awhile and I think it's something he wanted to do but was never able to.

I've been checking out some of the different sites and have made purchases from ebay and teletrade so far. I've met some seemingly good dealers and its been a pleasant experience. However, I'm already running into dead ends trying to fill some dates with my collection. Not looking for anything particularly rare or expensive but just dates I can't find on ebay, teletrade or ha.

So my question is: Does anyone have an tips for filling want lists? I've contacted a number of dealers online and haven't had much luck. There needs to be like a reverse-ebay where people can enter what they want, and dealers could put in a coin to see all the people seeking that item. In any case, I expect my project to take many years and I look forward to the journey.

I also bought my first raw coin (1911-S) and I am going to have it submitted. In hindsight I probably shouldn't have given my grading inexperience -- here's to hoping it doesn't come back to bite me! I was going to post a picture but all my pictures came out terrible. Not sure how you guys do it!

Welcome to The Forum. You can also use the Want List Feature on Alot of the Auction Sights you already mentioned. I Don't promote or bash any of them, just pass along info as i know it. David Lawrence Rare Coins also has a Want List Feature as well. I Think it's important to gather as much info as you can to fit your needs and proceed with caution rather then haste and i think you'll get alot of Enjoyment out of This. Ray In Florida.. image

Is there a coin shop anywhere nearby?
I go to two different ones and they are a 30-45 minute drive. I try to get to one of them once or twice a month.
If so, maybe you can develop a relationship with a dealer and you could eventually leave a want list with him (or her).
Also try to get to a show or a local coin auction.
I prefer to look and see in person if I can.

    Enjoy!

Oh, and get yourself a Redbook if you don't already have one.

A little depends on your budget and intentions. Raw or graded? What look are you going for? Red, RB or Brown? What grade range on business strikes?

If you are going high end, patience coupled with a cobra quickness will be needed when "just the right coin" comes along. In the lower grades, virtually everything you could want is readily available - at a price.

The cheapest possible way to publish your want list is to put it on the BST forum and enable your PM. Be as specific as possible on what you want - I'm sure that you will be gratified with the results.

You will find a wealth of info here, and there are those that can and will help. Remember, the only stupid question is the one that isnt asked!

    Welcome. image

This forum is a great place for advice, info., and coin contacts.
Look at as many coins as you can and proceed slowly.
Ask as many questions as you can think of,and then ask some more.
If I had asked more questions I could have avoided many mistakes.
Most of all have fun. image
