My daighter is interested in getting a detector to search in the surf. Anyone have any recommendations as to what type is best suited for this type of detecting?

  • Not an easy task.
    You would do best to find a local shop. Just about all companies sell a detector for water use.

    Most all dry land units have coils that can go into water. JUST don't get the box wet.

    Go to Google, and search: Underwater Metal Detectors

    Cost= $200 to $1,000 dollars

    Good Luck

  • Most of the detectors will search the surf......but like CROCK said...don't get the box wet...On the other hand, you could get a underwater detector..

  • I wanted to get a surf detector as well, and settled on a Minelab X-Terra based on the recommendation of the dealer. I told them them I wouldn't be going too deep in the water...

    However, if I had my time back, I would have went with a 100% waterproof machine. Sometimes the waves can knock you down, sometimes you can trip over driftwood, etc. It can be an expensive lesson if you get your semi-waterproof detector control box wet!

    Full waterproof is the only way to go.. shudson has an excellent point... accidental fall, wave spray etc... Cheers, RickO

    I wonder if you could wrap the box with plastic, and secure
    the ends with some tape?.

  • Minelab has an Excalibur 1000 that works really well(still learning) but you really need to be committed because it has quite the learning curve. Fully submersible and well worth the $1000 - $1200 investment! Go to Kellyco.com

  • I don't want to do this...not when it TAKES TWO WEEKS for you to come back and ask another question.

    GOOD LUCK

  • The best advice I can give you is to call the folks at KellyCo (www.kellycodetectors.com) and tell them exactly what your needs are, price range, etc. and they'll advise you of your options. Just don't buy a machine that was made in China (like the Cobra's), no matter how attractive the price is... lol.

    Stick to a good brandname like Garrett, White's, or Minelab. There are some other good brands out there, but these are the three that instantly come to mind when I think "metal detector". I currently own a Minelab which I'm quite pleased with, but I think my next purchase will be a Garrett (probably a 2500) just because of everything I've heard and read about them.

    Good luck!
  • i use a minelab excalibur underwater detector with great success and i would highly recomend it.....costly but well worth it.....good luck....hh
