Beach MD advice?

OmegaOmega Posts: 1,587 ✭✭✭
I finally made it to North Carolina. I am staying on Topsail Island. So far I have completely struck out finding anything on the beach. I took the kids to a playground today and managed $.46 and a small confidence boost. I have worked the beach from the dune in front of the beachfront homes all the way to the surf and have been blanked. Any advice on how to hunt the shore? I'm using a Prizm II and have had a few ghost blips but nothing prolonged like I get with a coin signal. Digging ever signal has netted me a total of nothing.
Is there a "better" area of the beach to work? (close to ocean, close to dune?) What is the best time? Three more days to work the beach. Ideas?? Thanks!

  • Think about the "Blanket Line"...The area were most people put down thing to sit on.

  • You are referring to a salt beach, right?

Since you don't have a PI machine it's going to be tough working wet salt sand. I have an MXT and it has salt balance, but the ability to work in salt environment for myself is even tough. My suggestion is to stick with the area commonly called the "blanket line". You can probably surmise why it's called that. You'll probably pick up a fair amount of coinage and very possibly jewelry. Working the beach in general is tough because of the vastness of it. Entries and exits are good spots. The blanket line as I mentioned it another good one. Near parking areas are very good too.

If you decide to attempt wet sand you'll need to turn your sensitivity/gain down. I'm not familiar with the Prizm 2, but if you can, you need to drop your gain to attempt to curtail the falsing that will occur. Also, instead of working along the waterline (parallel to it), work toward or away from it. This will give your ground balance a better chance to adjust. If your working parallel to it your machine will be seeing extreme changes in salinity with each swing. But, if you work toward or away from the salinity, the change will be a gradient (more gradual).

    Good luck

Thanks! I am off again to work the blanket line and entry points. Hopefully we'll have good news to report later!

I always had good luck on the NC beaches... well, nothing really great, but plenty of clad, two old watches, fishing lures/weights and the occasional hot rock. Cheers, RickO

Well today's finds: One clad quarter and one fishing weight. Back at it tomorrow!
  • We never have good results on our beaches, so much erosion...unless there has been a hurricane, and the sand has been washed down to the base level...Until then, you are lucky to find a pop top at 18"....
  • Frank, you are busted! But then again, I was lurking here too. I am so ready to give this a shot.

Sheesh, I need an Alt I.D.! MDing is fun though Laura. I think the girls have as much fun as I do finding "treasure".
