Flea Bay has really become a treasure trove of cr&p - cleaned, overgraded, counterfeit coins.......junk, junk, junk
It also seems that the vast majority of Sellers dont even understand or have knowledge of "WHAT" they are selling, just typical flippers of what they perceive as valuable
Especially with Best Offers, the Sellers dont even think with thier heads......if a coin is listed within 10-20 bucks of your "NET" proceeds from Flea Bay and Paypal (assuming a sale of several hundred dollars) - why are they persistent to sell, listing fees and closing w/o bids eat away at the 10-20 bucks profit - then they are in the hole.
To sum it up, Sellers that are half-wits (and this is being nice), Crap&y coins, time to just stay away.

<< <i>Wow, that's quite a statement you made. Especially on these forums where a number of the people on here are very knowledgeable eBay sellers who sell high quality coins. Just because you've been "screwed" don't just assume everything is crap on eBay. I agree with Marty, more good stuff for us.
Hey 7over8: It's a free country. If you really believe ebay sells nothing but junk, don't go there.

I'm not a newcomer, i've been buying/selling on the bay since 98
why do you have to take my statements as a "jab" at knowledgable sellers, I dont have a problem with them or thier coins.....
I just have a problem with the Sellers that are dopes and know nothing of what they are selling
my advice is - stay asleep unless you have something good to say.....
For raw coins I would agree 99.9%. Those that I have purchased lately, though the coins look like no problem coins have BB for Altered Surfaces.
PCGS/NGC graded coins usually bring what they are worth.

Would using the PCGS value guide help?
Sometimes a little legwork works wonders for true values.

Half-wits?? I doubt that.
A vast majority of those sellers know what they're doing, IMO.

I agree with you on many of your points, except that many of the sellers claiming ignorance are lying. They know perfectly well that they are selling cleaned, overgraded or counterfeit crap. It is not in their best interests to be knowlegable.

This is oh so true but if you don't sort through the crap, you'll never know if their are goodies out there!

Just like any flea market, you have to look through a lot of crap before you find something worthwhile. But they are out there if you know what you are looking for and are not to lazy to spend time looking. It's just like going to a small coin show. Many dealers have junk, but every once in a while you find something you like!

Which works out well because most buyers dont even understand or have knowledge of "WHAT" they are buying.
I do somewhat agree with you 7over8. But there are lots of good deals on ebay if you have the patience to
sort through all the garbage. And there is *alot* of garbage.

edited: n/m, it's not worth my time to argue. eBay is fine...it just takes some sorting through - like everything else in this world.

You have just described my local coin show. I have been three times and not picked up a single piece. Why would Ebay be immune? Utilizing Ebay is a process taking years and years, but over time good coins show up all the time.

coins for auction. i also feel that way about ebay. i check less often
and that is simply how it goes.
but every once in a while something interesting pops up and i try to
win it.
it all depends on how much you value your time and if it is worthless
to you to check ebay every day for a year... looking at 99% junk and
1% good stuff.
after a while i cannot stand it and check less. find other things to do.
maybe visit 4-5 times a month and quickly scan with my favorite searches.

Amen! As Tyler can attest to, I've assembled a pretty nice set of Barber Half dollars, most of which have come from Ebay. Yes, it has taken patience, but nice coins show up there quite frequently. I can't remember the last time I found anything worthwhile for my set from my local monthly coin show.
So what you're saying is: nothing has changed

Yep, like finding needles in a hay stack-- they are in there, just takes patience. I'm talking about raw coins on ebay specifically.
