Circulating the dollar coin

Recently I picked up four rolls of dollar coins at the bank.I opened the rolls up and put the best four in flips for my collection. Now,what to do with the rest but spend 'em,right?

Went down to the Walmart to spend a few of these and the clerk asked me "what are these?";image Went to another store with a few more and the clerk says,"I see you've decided to get rid of these.:mrdisgust2.Went to the grocery store and paid in shiny Presidential dollars and the clerk says,"You must feel kind of rich or something with these."image

To "what are these?" I patiently explained what they are, showing the $1 symbol on the coin to the clerk. On a side note, it's unknown whether the self check out machine will accept these coins or not.

To "I see you've decided to get rid of these" I responded with "well, they are legal tender."

To "you must feel kind of rich or something with these" I answered,"well, they are gold and I don't know why I'm paying you with them."

All three clerks that I've given these to seem to be thinking I'm being a PITA.Maybe so,but I can argue that their counting skills are being worked on,right?

  • I gave my 6 year old 1st grade son two Ike's and a Kennedy half for lunch today. He was so excited to spend them at the cafeteria on pizza and cookies, I wonder how the lunch lady will respond...

The irony is that WalMart was the initial distribution channel of choice by the gummint for the Sacagawea dollars in 2000.

When I was a kid, if some one gave me Kennedy Halves (or Franklins), I would have kept them and gone without lunch. The Ikes came out when I was 8, so even then, I would have skipped lunch that day and squirrelled those away. I had a big glass jar that I kept my "collection" in. Any wheat pennies and older coins went right in....

No one looks twice when I spend them but I don't get them in change.
  • I usually try to pick up $100 or so every month in dollars and circulate them, never gotten a second glance from anybody I've tried giving them to. I have never received them in change, though.

All of the self checkout machines I've tried using them at definitely take them though, as well as most parking meters around here.

i've had some clerks ask "is that coin 'fficial currency?"
and others call the manager to "make sure"image

I had some strange looks and questions initially with the prez dollars... but in the last few months, nothing. They take them without even a flicker of interest. Cheers, RickO

Wait 'til they try to mark them with a pen to make sure they are not counterfeit.
  • In December I paid the kids that shoveled my walk in presidential dollars. From the look they gave me after I handed over the coins I imagine they thought the coins were made of gold!

i had a similar experience at a diner recently.

i didn't have the heart to ask them if they had heard of Sacagawea.
  • Walmart may have been an original distributor of golden dollars, but they got very tired of it very fast. It seemed like only a week or two before you really ticked them off by asking for them. On the other hand, for the first day or two, they had them in the cash registers attempting to give them out in change.

Many places accept them, but do not distribute them unless you ask, including banks. They just don't want to deal with the potential customer rejection.
  • I get the same responses when I try to spend them, and the only time I get them in change is at the post office. It's strange, because when I took the family to Canada last summer, I really liked the convenience of the "Loonies" and "Twonies", and it was nice not to have a billfold stuffed full of ones...

Most places just roll them back up and take them back to the bank, instead of recirculating them back to the public. These places do nothing for the future of the dollar coins, soon they may be in SMS sets and only available from the mint at a hefty charge.

I Wish the Coinstar Machines would Take them but i got and E-Mail directly from the Coinstar company saying their Machines don't take them. And on a Side Note, i tried a New $5.00 bill at one of our Many Casino's here in Florida and The Slots don't recognize them yet. Ray in Florida..
