Try calling the telephone number on the label 1-800-328-6276 (or 1-888-3M HELPS). It may be listed on the Material Safety Data Sheet for the product, which is MSDS-19-7982-2- again try calling. If you do not get an answer, PM me.

edited to add, 3M is a TM. The product is 3M(TM) Dust Remover

The side of the package that I had seen listed only one ingredient and that was 1,1-difluoroethane (freon).

Tom, the old cans (before they put in a bittering agent to deter morons form huffing the stuff) were just the 1,1-difluoroethane. They started adding the bitterant recently, I believe, and now the label says, "Contains: 1,1-difluoroethane". There's definitely a bittering agent, however, as anyone who's sprayed too much of that stuff in their office knows. The nasty taste you get in your mouth doesn't go away for hours - and that's just from spraying the stuff on the keyboard and dusting a bunch of 2x2s.

I'll make a note to check out the MSDS - that's a good idea.

Its probably the one called Bitrex or denatonium benzoate. Not to worry as I doubt that you could stand to eat enough of it to harm you.

Bitrex is probably correct. We used to use that in the gelatin shell of bath beads when I used to work at a company that made softgel capsules. It is pretty bitter, we tasted it one time out of curiosity.

Bitrex is pretty nasty and is also what I would suspect.

Eat enough of it and you might wish that it was detonated benzoate.image

I'm mainly interested in whether it poses any danger to my coins.

I agree with the suggestions that it's probably bitrex. I found this post somewhere on the net:

"Where I work (Aerofil) one of the products that we put into cans (aerosols) is dusters or canned air. Due to people huffing it we are now going to put Bitrex (Denatonium Benzoate) into the dusters. There was a high school student that died on Christmas Eve. from huffing here in Sullivan. They are going to have to buy a special filler to put this into the can. I think we will be putting a half of a gram into the can before it gets charged with the propellant. The Bitrex is a very nasty product to work with according to someone that has worked with it in the past. We are doing a test run next week. I will let you know how it goes"

By the by, I happened upon one site describing the joys of huffing canned air. I have never read such idiocy in my life. Definitely proof that either huffing canned air kills of massive amounts of brain cells, or that people with massive amounts of missing brain cells like to huff it. What a bunch of morons.

Denatonium is a quaternary ammonium cation. It is a compound of a salt with an inert anion like benzoate or saccharide. The structure of denatonium is related to the local anesthetic lidocaine, differing only by the addition of a benzyl group to the amino nitrogen.

I wouldn't think it would harm your coins, but why take chances. You could be known as the inventor of Bitrex Toning.

Just a heads up with this stuff. The new fad is that kids are buying it and inhaling it to get a "high". The problem is the propellant used in it is concentrates in the lungs and suffocates them if they inhale too much of it. We had a couple of kids locally to die from it.

What a stupid stupid thing to do.......

that was from google/wikpedia. similar compounds that you might recognize are the quaternary ammonium compounds found in those little moist towelettes or baby wipes, etc.
