Half Dimes

I am a newbie in collecting and came across some half dimes for about $40 a piece I don't remember the dates and they were kind of dark coins. I have never seen a half dime before and was wondering if they would be a good buy. I usually just buy what catches my eye but I am thinking these may be an investment for later down the road when I need $$ for some coins I really like. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank youimage

Buy what you like, but try to find undamaged coins.

I would read up on the series in the Red Book and try to familiarize yourself on the series first.

If you are buying coins for investment, you need to know a lot more... random purchases seldom provide profit - at least not significant profit. Cheers, RickO

In order to know whether the half dimes you saw would be a good investment at $40 apiece, we would need to know considerably more about them. As you might guess, I have a certain bias toward these beautiful little pieces of history, but while some half dimes offered at $40 would be incredible bargains, others at the same price would not.

If you cannot remember the dates of these half dimes, can you recall the designs or types? Did they have a representation of the Bust (head) of Miss Liberty in one form or another, or was there an image of a seated Miss Liberty? Was there an eagle on the reverse, or simply the denomination? Any additional information that you might recall would be most helpful.
They that can give up essential Liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither Liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin
  • They were of the seated variety with I believe one of the bust. I was in sensory overload there were so many coins I have never seen like 3 cent nickels large cents and such. Some middle age lady was selling her fathers collection I wanted to cry looking at all those coins. Oh well maybe I will pass on these until I become a better coin collector. Thank you
