  • yea, sure does look like a proof.

Perhaps an error on the label?

That's what I'm thinking. Looks proof to me which would greatly change the value of this coin.

yes I'd say proof as well - my money's on a label miss-print.

I sent this to the seller:

<< <i>FYI, that coin is an obvious proof strike, not mint state. It would be neat if you sent it back to NGC so they could fix the error. You would be doing a good thing for the hobby that way. Thank you. >>

We will see if he/she replies.

A perspective buyer should know this is a proof coin as well. However, should someone purchase it not knowing the difference (shame if they do that), it is too bad NGC will not give them their money back, since it is a technical error and not backed by the guarantee.
  • I sent him a message too.
    Dear w.d.cable,

That coin sure does look like a proof. Have you looked into this? NGC may have mis-labeled the coin. Just my opinion and I don't mean to put a damper on your auction but from the pic it looks proof. May be different in hand of course.

    Here is his answer:

<<<This is the most beautiful Mint State coin I have ever owned. It is MS67RD The only one graded by NGC>>>

I just checked the certification number at the NGC web site and they show it as a PR67RD with a value of $23.75. I wrote the seller and told him/her.

I emailed the seller and got exactly the same response that John did.

Then it is a label error. It would be a shame if the seller did not back this auction off.

Ouch, that's pretty damning evidence I think.

That's a proof and a mechanical error on NGC's part. Plain and simple. No question about it.

    Well...it didn't sell, thank God.

But it'll probably be back. Talk about a pretty penny, $42.95 shipping costs!

This is the response I got from my email to the seller:

<< <i>Thanks for the email. Will have a lot of homework with NGC before???

Anyway stopped auction before getting too deep with a bid. Thanks for your time.

I just sent in 4 1960 large date red proof links and 2 1961 red proof link pennies and would you know all were labeled MS on the website and the coin. Am I missing something? IF they come in a proof plastic wrap and in a envelope and my frankies came back labeled proof 67s and proof 68s don't you think something is wrong?

The grades I got were all MS red 1961 grade 66 x4 and the 1960 were lg dates ms 66 redx2. Go Figure, I wish I could break them out, and dip em, because I know the 1960 lg dates are higher grade but the dark toning takes away from the grade of 67.image
