I was somewhat curious about the mintages too, so I started compiling data from ebay listings for these fabulous-looking pieces of bullion.

You might try contacting one of the dealers who list them regularly on ebay and ask them for a source on the mintages.

The crazy thing is why are these buillon coins not recognized for numismatics... The mintage numbers are absurdly low... some of these buillon coins are minted to the tune of less than 5,000.

I believe this is an un-recognized niche... The coins are attractive, collectible, and soon to be the foundation of my collection.

  • This is the last year for Britannia:

Farewell Britannia - George Brown Rules Britannia Uncool
    Britannia waves goodbye!
One of George Brown's last acts as Chancellor of the Exchequer and boss of the Royal Mint, was to decree that Britannia had to go. In August 2005, the Royal Mint promoted a design competition for new UK coinage designs. In December 2007, it was announced that all the normal circulation coin designs were to be replaced by new ones. This appear to apply to all seven common denominations, from the pound coin down to the penny, including the fifty pence. Of all seven existing reverse design themes or motifs, we believe that Britannia on the fifty pence, is the most iconic, and the most instantly identifiable with Britain. It is possibly a mistake to replace her, although up to this stage nobody knows whether she will be reprieved. We suspect not. Our guess is also that the Mint will keep the new coin designs as a closely guarded secret until the last possible moment. Writing this in the week before the 2008 World Money Fair in Berlin, it is possible that the Mint intends to unveil new collector coin sets based on the new designs, but if so, these will be under the usual embargo until the official announcement date. It is also possible that outline details of new coin sets will be available, but the designs still kept secret, who knows?

    Thoughts?

From what I remember (not sure if it's still true), but just because a year has passed, doesn't mean minting stops. I believe they can just mint whatever year they want, when they want, which is why it may be hard to find concrete numbers.
  • I think retiring from Britannia is a shame... Not sure that it applies to the 1 oz Britannia as it is not a common circulated coin. I will be stockpiling them just in case.

Well, for starters that article seems to be talking about the 50 pence piece, not the silver or gold britannia bullion pieces.
  • Pendragon- That is what I said... that is dealing only with common circulation...

So, now I am hugging myself as I just picked up a 2002 1/4 oz Proof for 20$ above spot- I hate paying above spot but seeing that there were only about 1750 minted makes me real real happy. Will not pay off today but in 50 years... I will be happy.

  • 50 years I'll be worm food so it doesn't really matter to me. I did walk into a shop a couple days ago and bought my first Silver Britannia. 1999 dealer wanted 20 bucks, it's a beautiful coin.

$20 is a nice price if the coin was at all decent.

50 years from now, I can only hope that the country is still here and I'm not living in a bunker.
  • well, I am still fairly young and have dual citizenship thus I hope that one of the two countries I can live in will surviveimage

Pendragon turned me onto my first Britannia-

Now have 12 oz and 7 various gold Britannias

    Just beginning...

  • I can tell you that you can remove one of the 1/10 BU Gold Britannias, I lost one that I wore as a necklace at the bottom of a 150 foot deep 18inch wide (at 120 foot where I was, narrowing to 6 inches as it went down) razor rock passage in a cave in Tennesee.. its long gone.

I know that, I just was wondering what people thought about the changes. I saw some news articles where comments were made and a lot of Brits were not to happy about this. Sorry if I didn't specify as the article speaks for itself.

  • Removing Britannia from British Coins would be as silly as say removing Liberty from our coins and replacing her with a bunch of dead guys.. just the most horrid thing one could do, in fact it would b... oh, nevermind.. we did that image

Yeah, I saw that page. Agreed, lots of good info. Wonder what's up with the 2004-date mintages?
  • EagleguyEagleguy Posts: 2,264 ✭✭✭✭✭
I also discovered these through Pendragon and have thought about picking some up. Does anybody want to spill the beans and let us now where these can be found for sale on-line?

    Thanks!

I have all 5 different Philip Nathan Britannia designs in 1 troy ounce silver BU and 1/4 troy ounce gold proof (Standing Britannia, Britannia on a Chariot, Una and the Lion Britannia, Athena-like Helmeted Britannia and Seated Britannia). I do not like the last 2 years Britannia design that were NOT done by Philip Nathan. image
