I love this die. The engraver letters the obverse by hand, and when done says "Aw shoot! I forgot to put the decimal point in 3.5 G for the Copper weight!!!!!"

So he goes and shoehorns a period in the 35 he had punched to make it read 3.5 grams copper. I love hand engraving!

The obverse and reverse lettering (as needed) was done by Charles Barber. Compare to the other metric coins including the stellas, which Charley did by himself.

This coin exists in copper, before and after the period is added. The "before" coin is unique, the "after" R-7.

That coin is worthy of being loved, that's for sure. Very sweet pattern.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Beautiful.... and it is gold.... Cheers, RickO
  • That is a sweet coin and has a great pedigree being from the Eliasberg Sale.

    5. Ex: H.P. Smith; John Story Jenks; Elmer Sears; J.M. Clapp; Clapp Estate; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Bowers and Merena's sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, May 1996, lot 313. The present example.

Anyone know who owned it from 1996-2008???

There's not supposed to be a decimal. That's the total weight ie., 35 grams.
"Gold is money, and nothing else" (JP Morgan, 1912)

"“Those who sacrifice liberty for security/safety deserve neither.“(Benjamin Franklin)

"I only golf on days that end in 'Y'" (DE59)

<< <i>There's not supposed to be a decimal. That's the total weight ie., 35 grams. >>

Right, and the inscripion ends with "35 GRAMS," but before that it breaks down the individual weights of the silver, copper and gold and is supposed to say "3.5 C" to show that it is 10% copper. The engraver goofed, put in "35 C" and then corrected it after at least one trial strike in copper.

Thanks for the added insight. I didn't remember the "." aspect, copper trial, etc. image

Glad you clarified that for us. Aki was getting upset. I've cleaned up three puddles in the last ten minutes, and had to change my socks.

Well, I do like you Andy, but it's more of a sort of numismatic respect, really....... image
