Wiener Medals -- More Added! See sig link

Lately I've been very intrigued with Jacques Wiener and his series of European Cathedral Medals. My first one came in today and I have six more arriving (image) anyday. Well, today I was able to play around with the camera and get some pics that I am semi-happy with. Well, here is a quick SM template and a closeup of some of the detail on the medal. Ohh, it may help to tell which medal this is -- the Catedral de Cordoba -- and it appears to be a very late die state with two cuds, one on the obverse (at 9 oclock on the rim) and one on the reverse (to the right of the center column, do cuds occur in the center of a die like this?).

This picture also shows the true color of the medal better.

Larger pics of the medal can be found
here and here.

P.S. The link below in my sig has pics of my 8 wiener medals. They are: Bonn, Cologne, Cordoba, Magdeburg, Mainz, Speyer, Strasbourg, and Westminster Abbey. Enjoy!

a superb example, thanks for sharing! These are truly stunning in hand, the level of workmanship and striking quality is astounding. I enjoy this series, and here is a thread on our darkside forum for those wanting to see other examples:

thanks for sharing yours, and congrats on the pick-up(s)!!

but then again, I have a soft spot for all high-relief medals, especially with color. This 3 ounce chunk of sterling silver picked up some wonderful patina over the years, and the Royal Mint packaging with it's blue velvet interior worked wonders on the perimeter.

    Very Nice !

I had picked out a couple of these awhile back in a Heritage sale to try to maybe get (at least one) but it seems like more than a few people had the same idea and I was soundly defeated... image

    They are fantastic designs IMO.

How old are these medals and how much do they usually cost? Neat items.

Ben Weiss has a wonderful website dedicated to this series. The specific link to the Cordoba medal are listed below. This particular medal was struck from hand engraved steel dies in 1859 and is part of the '50 Greatest European Cathedrals' series that Jacques Wiener embarked on. Tragically however, Jacques only finished 41 medals before he started to go blind in 1872. He was an apprentice to his two younger brothers who each went on to be an accomplished medalist Leopold and Charles. As a side note, Leopold went on to become the First Engraver and the Belgium Mint.

The European medals are larger (58mm) than their Belgium cousins (~48mm IIRC), and thus cost more. These medals range all over the place in cost. They can be found in some junk boxes for ~$20 if you are very, very lucky. However, these medals will run ~$200 on average if you can find them on ebay, with the more popular medals costing much more (Notre Dame, Cologne, etc.).
