Finally, something besides modern coinage...

modern non-coinage. image Found this at a local park this morning along with a smattering of change. This sure beats zinc cents.

    That's a great looking eagle. It appears to be in great shape and a nice keeper. How big is the medal?

  • I don't think it was in the ground very long. Was pretty shallow and has a clear coating over most of it. It appears to be bronze/ brass and weighs 32 grams. The Morgan weighs 26.4g.

    Nice finds! Some airman probably lost those out of his/her pocket recently.

    Those are "challenge coins" and quite popular among military circles (as well as law enforcement). I collect Air Force challenge coins as a matter of fact.

    The top one is a commemorative in honor of the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force which was officially organized on September 18, 1947.

    The bottom one is a coin given to airmen upon graduation from basic training.

    Yep.. Challenge Coins are cool.... I have a whole collection of them... I have never MD'd one though. Cheers, RickO
