What are your current collecting projects?

After seeing tennesseebankers awesome auto project it made me wonder what you guys are working on these days.

As for me, I am slowly building an 08 Heritage set and I am busting some 08 Topps blasters for fun. My current vintage projects are 1970 and 1972 Topps raw sets.

My goal is to stay focused this year and stick with baseball as much as possible. Not sure it is going to work!image

How about you?

  • I dig the 08 Heritage, good luck on the set. I'm working on:

    -- 1949 Bowman PSA 7+ (5-6 for stars)
-- Manny Ramirez minor league and rookies in PSA 10 (I believe I need 10 of the 29)
-- Early Wynn player set from 1949 - 1963 Topps and Bowman

Good luck on staying focused man! I've struggled with it myself!

Up until this point I have been buying up Vintage Football HOF'ers and star players from the 1950-1952 Bowman sets. This year Im still going to do that but I would like to expand and pick up some 48/49 Leafs as well as some 1960's material.

Paul, DEF keep us updated on those Leaf's man... nice set!!!!
  • Trying to stay focused is easier said then done. Right now I'm working on:
Rickey Henderson - '80's cards in PSA 10
Brooklyn Dodgers '55 Topps in 4-6

Also trying to put together an auto team set of the 92 Buffalo Bills, but that has been a long project.

I am still working on putting together the 30 top regular issued cards (no All-Stars, combo cards - except rookies) from 1956-1985 Topps. Right now here is where I stand:

    1956 - 10/30 - Collection primarily PSA 5
    1957 - 1/30 - Collecting PSA 5 and 6. I only have the Snider in a 6.
    1958 - 7/30 - Again primarily PSA 5 and 6.
    1959 - 30/30
    1960 - 1/30 - Only have a PSA 6 Ford.
    1961 - 30/30 - I just finished this one with a PSA 6 Aaron.
    1962 - 11/30
1963 - 20/30 - The only real big ones I need are the Aaron and Clemente. I probably won't buy the Rose or Stargell. I just don't like the look of them to pay that kind of money. Maybe, down the road I will change my mind.
    1964 - 29/30 - I only need a PSA 6 Niekro rookie.
    1965 - 6/30
1966 - 27/30 - Still need Perry, Aaron and McCovey in PSA 6.
    1967 - 27/30 - Still need Seaver and Brooks in a PSA 5 or 5.5 and Carew in a 6.
    1968 - 29/30 - Only need the Ryan in a PSA 5 or 6.
    1969-1980 are complete.
    1981 - 28/30 - Still need Stargell or Niekro in a PSA 8 or 9.
    1982 - 29/30 - Still need Yaz in a PSA 8 or 9.
    1983-1985 are complete.

    I have all the Mickey Mantles except 1956, 1957, 1958, 1960 and 1965. From 1960-1973 I am buying only PSA 6 or 7 except for the 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1965 Mantle, which are/will be 5's. Also, I will grab the 1967 Seaver, Brooks Robinson and maybe the Ryan in a PSA 5 or 5.5. From 1974 thru 1979 I bought PSA 7's and 8's. From 1980 up I bought PSA 8's and 9's.

My goal this year is to finish the 1963, 1964, 1966, 1968, 1981 and 1982 subsets. Also, I would like to buy either the Seaver, Carew or Robinson from 1967.

I also occasionally buy some modern cards, but my main focus is complete the above subsets.

Since I dont collect modern sets, I recently started getting the key rookie cards from the 80s. (Mattingly, Ripken, Gwynn etc.) There are soom good rookie sets in the registry.
I need 17 cards to finish my 1955 Topps set.
Im a little more than half way through my 1964 Topps Giants set in PSA 8.

Focus for me is not too easy.....I collect a lot of things other then cards. In cards I have been working at

1987 Donruss in PSA 10 (Have about 40 and I am #1 on the registry).

1981-1985 Topps PSA football and baseball. I try to keep at least 10 on the way and collect other years, but have a more focus on this period.

Heisman autos and RC's. Started this project about a month ago....have about 20 of each....of the 72/73 Heisman's. (I think there is 73 now but I only need one Archie Griffin auto).

    1974 & 1982 Kellogg's PSA sets. About 70% in 1974 and just reached 50% in 1982.

HOF autographs. I use to collect HOF pretty heavy 10 years ago. Meaning I had 15-20 copies of all the common people and was only missing 10 football HOFs at one time. Selling this collection years ago is one of the few things I regret selling. (Picked up a nice lot of PSA/DNA football autos this morning).

2000 Donruss Preferred BGS Graded Series, have about 60% of the base set, all but a few 9.5's.

All the 2000 Collector Edge PSA sets.

    2002 UD Graded PSA cards.

Steve Young raw cards I dont have. My goal this year is 1500 different cards and I started around 1300, which means I need about 3 a week I don't have. So I have been keeping at least 3 on the way to me at all times and I imagine I might be at 1500 now, but likely a little short (but well on pace).

Steve Young graded cards in PSA, BGS or SGC.

    Marcus Allen in PSA.

I have a bunch of other sets I am working on, but these are the items I most search on ebay right now. Most of these sets are over 50% complete and I would like to complete a few of them...so I can have more time to search for other items to buyimage

    Clear Skies,
    Mark
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

Cardinals team sets, which is nearly at a stand still. I have all basic issues. Now, I just need rare cards.

Cardinals TTM. Again, I am at a stand still on this project as well. I have already gotten every Topps and vintage Bowman card signed (if they sign for free through the mail). In the future, I may try to get some more that sign for a minimal charge.

1952 Topps Set (very, very poor condition). I have 140 cards in my possession with a few more on the way. If anybody has any laying around in bad shape, I could use them.

    Currently doing:

1961 Fleer Basketball (need 3 cards, both Cousy's and Sam Jones) These are 5's or better on the stars and 6's or better on everything else
1957 Topps Basketball (Just started really, but I have 12 of 80) These are 4's and 5's.
1969 Topps Basketball (Have 20 of 99) 7's or better
Carlton Fisk PSA Basic Set (45% complete)
Carl Yastrzemski PSA Basic Set (100% complete, but need to upgrade 60T, 63F, 65T and 67T to PSA 8's)

    Mini set's I'm doing are:
99 UD Retro Inkredible Basketball (Have 5 or 22)
07 Topps Heritage Baseball Real One Autographs
06-07 UD Chronology Lettermen - Celtics Only - trying to spell BOSTON and CELTICS - Only problem is Charlie Scott is the only "T" in the Celtics set and there are only 10 in existence - I have one

    Good luck to everyone

I am working on staying focused this year (really hard to do) since the economy is killing me. i set some collecting goals in january and so far i'm staying with them. work to finish my 70, 75 mini topps (raw) sets, already traded for a 77 set i needed. work on 55 topps & 55 bowman set (raw). pick up a certain amount of 52 topps/ t 206 cards. pretty much keep to my baseball sets, except i need a jordan rookie in psa 8, i now have from 93 to 73 topps complete. i'm also trying to trade more then buy to try and move some of the cards i no longer need. so far its working but we'll see when the summer starts. i have a hard time passing on good buys and that gets me in trouble most times.

1951 Bowman is on the back burner, but I'm getting itchy on that one (raw mostly).
Star Cards that I like the looks of are always on my radar (terrible impulse buyer) nice raw or PSA 6+ on anything 56 or newer.
  • I'm down to 45 cards on my Horrors of War Set. Fortunately I have all the tough cards (Nos.1, 88, 99, 240 and 277 to 288). I hope to finish the set by the end of the year.

I'm 5 cards away from finishing my '75 Mini set and I'm at about 92% on my Jim Rice Master set. After I finish the 75 minis I will start to look for another project to keep me busy. Right now the top candidates are: finishing my '63 Fleer set (currently 29%), starting a 1963 Topps Set, or wasting a bunch of money and doing a 1993 UD SP set.
  • Well im still working on my 1960 topps baseball set . I also am going to start getting some 50's bowman football

Well, I'll be getting another $700 to spend on cards soon for my b-day (plus another case of pages); I'll be using that to finish my 1975-79 Topps sets by getting the remaining key cards I need in PSA 7 (and getting a head start on the graded 1974's). I also hope to pick up a 2007 Topps Red Sox factory set (this will FINALLY get me current on my Topps set run as the 2008 factory sets probably won't be out till fall, right?).

Furthermore, I hope to finish up my Donruss/Score set runs (I now only need 1997 and 1998 for both) as well as 1980-82, 1992 Topps football sets (w/o Montana RC for now) and possibly try to get the football run up to 2000. And if there's any left over, maybe I'll grab a 1982 Topps Traded set (w/ Ripken in PSA 8) and 1984 Fleer Update set (but w/o the Clemens/Puckett RC's for now).

Clearly though getting the remaining 1975-79 Topps PSA 7 key cards I need has first priority.

Right now, I am focused on upgrading my 1977 Topps Baseball All-Star collection (just 18 cards). I have them all in PSA 9 and five of them in 10. I would like to (someday) have them all in 10. Of course, this may not happen but it is fun trying. I am doing the same for the 1976 Topps All-Stars but I am primarily focused on the 77s. I only collect Topps Baseball AS cards from 1975 thru 1981. I have nearly all of these cards in at least PSA 8 as it stands now.

I can't fathom how much more difficult it would be to do some of the sets a lot of you guys (and gals) do. image Some of your collections are really impressive!
  • It must be truely great to finish a set. I think the last thing I finished was a 1978 topps.

I keep having one or two cards to complete some very nice sets. Have not gone to a cards show in years - seems to be the place to finish out a set.

    I would like to finish another Kelloggs set - 1970, 1972, 1974, 1975 or 1976.

I have to find a small set to work on as I cannot afford the classics.

    good luck to everyone.

    cheers

    Football - '51B, '54B, '55TAAs, '55B, and other random '50s sets

And then there's another project that I could disclose but then I would have to kill all of y'all.

Still working on my Hall of Famers Career in cards set 1950-2005 in PSA 5-10. I have about 3800 cards of the projected 10000, give or take a few. Its been a great experience so far and nothing can diminish the joy I get from my son working on this project with me. Hopefully we will be able to complete it someday. My focus this year will be getting a ton of raw cards graded and concentrating on finishing off the decade of the '50's. Below is a link if anyone wants to take a look, I would like to get everything scanned in also with names.

Archie Manning Basic Set PSA 9 or better (have not much on this one yet)

  • I only have 2 projects going and none are extremely tough which is good for someone like me. The one I just started is getting a PSA graded card of every member in the Braves HOF. It will be a relatively easy mini-set, but I don't plan on just stopping at one for most of the players (especially Spahn). The other set that I've been working on for a little is the 05 Upper Deck Origins on card auto set of the Devil Rays ONLY. So far I have both Crawfords, both Uptons and just need one more Kazmir and one more Aubrey Huff. There are two different versions to each player autograph in case you didn't understand why I was saying both, Origins and Old Judge.

I also really like the looks of the Red Man cards so I'll try to pick up some of those from time to time if it's a good deal and a player I like. Most of the vintage I'm buying is anywhere in the 2-6 range depending on player and cost. I'm also going to continue to buy some Carl Crawford autos that are ON CARD only.

Does "Get at least one of everything" count as a project?

My Jerry Porter #ed rookies project was coming along quite well, although it ran into somewhat of a snag recently, as prices went up dramatically on some of his rookies on eBay when he signed with a new team (Jaguars). Most of my vintage graded sets have been muddling along, with a card here or there, although late '70s sets have been sometimes having a noticeable addition of cards due to 4SC - I seem to add to my player master sets with more noticeable frequency. My HOFer baseball set hasn't been doing much, although I've been adding some on other sports (picking up 3 new players in football for less than $3 apiece recently was nice). My type card collection had a big boost early this year due to a catalog auction lot of essentially type cards. My vintage raw set project had nice boosts in the late '60s and early '70s due to a dealer selling a lot of very sharp commons and semistars cheaply. My UD MVP gold parallel sets have been steadily picking a card up here and there. My HOFer GU and autos had nothing added for a while, but I picked up one very cheaply due to a bad listing job recently.

Other than that, not much happening. image

    Michael Jordan Master Registry
Baseball/Basketball/Football HOF Rookie Registries (very slow progress)
Jason Kidd Rookie collection (combination of graded and raw)

I also recently decided to move forward on a collection I had thought of starting years ago - a collection of RCs of anyone who attended my alma mater (Cal). At first I thought this wouldn't be too hard, but after I started researching all of the past players who actually had cards issued, I realized the # of cards was going to be much larger than anticipated. Ultimately I'd like to create a Collectors Showcase registry, but so far I only have a handful that are graded.

Now on to something I'd really like to be able to do. I obtained my first 1953 Bowman Color baseball cards from a member on here and, well I think I'm hooked.

I'm sure I'll never be able to do this set but when I can afford it I'll pick up a card or two and just take it as it comes. And I was showing my wife these and the reprints that have been made and she agrees that these even in low grade look so much better than the reprints.
  • My main goals right now are to finish my 2008 Heritage and find the last 4 cards I need for my 2003 Heritage set. After that, I'm working on my Topps baseball set collection with the '8' year, so I'll look for an 1998 set and when the come out, grab a 2008 set. I may look for a good deal on the other sets I'm missing from my Topps run from 1978- present, but only if they are at rock bottom prices. image

Thinking about doing hall of famers 1956 and 1973 topps plus cool in action 1973 topps.
  • I've put my collecting in neutral, I'm wondering about the time spent on it, the return, and other things going on.

It's still fun, my goals are...

-92/93 Basketball subsets. Beam Team, Magics All Rookie, Total D.

-Completing my card collection from my childhood years, about 78-92/93. I have maybe 60-70% of what I want.

-Still alot of packs and boxes I want to get. I cracked a bunch of packs last year I've never opened before...85/86, 86/87 OPC hockey, 80 Topps football. 81 football I haven't broken much of. More 86.

Maybe some 80 Topps rack baseball. 86 Fleer basketball I have to crack at least once in my collecting lifetime. Although I may regret it financially. 80/81 basketball I've never opened.

80/81 OPC hockey would be great, just to buy a box and put it away. I dont follow OPC hockey wax the way I did in the 90's, mid 90's, but its gotten rare. Some of the lesser boxes have doubled in price in 10 years (83/84 for example). So, its still on my radar.

And GI Joe, and Transformers from the 80's, those are on my list. And Muscle Men.
  • The same as always. Trying to complete my 2000 Collector's Edge Supreme Master set. I thought about trying to finish my 2005 Topps Cracker Jack set at the same time but decided to stick with the Supreme set. It's coming along ok but cards that I need just don't show up very often. Well, in my price range that is. Who knows how long it will take to finish this thang.

<< <i>Let's see, not including completed sets..

    Baseball - '53T, '54T, '54 RH, '55 DH, and '56T
    Football - '51B, '54B, '55TAAs, '55B, and other random '50s sets

And then there's another project that I could disclose but then I would have to kill all of y'all.

I am collecting signed Topps rookie cards of HOF'ers from 1952 up to about 75, and for some players that I like after that. Here's what I have so far that is either in hand or on the way. There will be some that I can't get because I can't afford them (IE, signed Mantle rookie. probably Clemente, etc.) but I hope to pick up the rest
