The Appalachian Mountians are rich with coal, the coal is rich with sulfur.
The poor nickel has been living in the Appalacian Mountains and this exposure to the riches of the Appalations enhances the presentation of the surface of the coin.
Someone was smart enough to realize this and had the coin graded as such.
Its amazing how coal touches just about every aspect of life in one way or another.............who knew ?
There was a hoard of nickels supposedly from the Appalachian region, hence the term. I've heard multiple stories as to AT vs. NT. You'll have to make up your own mind as to which they are. FWIW I find them attractive, although I do not own any.
Take the wisdom of TomB to heart.... AT is AT all day long.... of course, from the way toned coins sell, obviously many do not care. (at least until they are challenged) Cheers, RickO
Man I need to move to Eastern Kentucky...bring a few hundred BU war Nickels, set them outside daily and let them tone while I hang out for a few years, then sell them for big bucks!
