Will the new High Relief Saint Gaudens gold coin.....

Raise demand (and therefore prices) of its original counterparts, or decrease demand for the original ones because people can now obtain a reasonable substitute much cheaper?

I don't see it as a substitute for the real thing......

There is no way it will look exactly the same.

  • I think it may raise demand for the original. That market isn't going to decrease for a modern commem.

If we are talking about a really thick High Relief coin, this is something that is not exactly like the original, so no effect.....

The people that can buy the existing high relief material will do so, and so poor stiffs that can't afford those will get these and be happy.....

  • I have a feeling the modern piece will be pretty weird looking.

I don't think it will change demand for the originals.

  • IMO this new one will be sold out quicker than we think. Then it might be in high demand as the elder ones.

If they limit these to anything under 100,000 of these, it will sell out rather quick in my opinion.....

Any idea are these going to be available in proof only or what?

Did the ASBs sell out in a day or a week or something? These might sell out as fast if there's a reasonable limit.

These will serve as a substitute for many that either choose not to or cannot afford an original.

They probably won't affect the prices of the originals since the buyers are different. It's not like these are going to have the same date and a date by itself is enough to justify a high price, even if everything else is exactly the same.

There is no relation between the two coins, other than design. They are two completed different markets.

That said, I think the modern ones will fly out of the Mint as they will be priced only a little above bullion for a fabulously beautiful design. Think about it, an average grade of 69 and priced somewhere around $1100 - $1150 (a complete guess based upon today's bullion prices). What's not to like.

It may cause a minor uptick in the originals due to heightened awareness, but they have always been highly sought after and quite pricey given the relative rarity or lack thereof.

According to the article in Coin World, these are going to be struck for the entire year as demand dictates, which would negate any possibility of a sell-out.

With newer technology, the new Saint may look to clean, and crisp.

The antique look of the originals, would be tough to duplicate, IMHO.

I will still try to pick some up though.

I don't think anything could reduce the demand for the originals. The mint has already stated the obvious differences between this new high relief and the 1907 high relief. The addition of "In God We Trust" is one of them.
I doubt the new coin will be a true copy of the original. They are already talking about chiseling detail. They will probably "refine" this and "strengthen" that. I will be pleasantly surprised if they bring back the Ultra High Relief as it was, in all its glory, but I am extremely skeptical.

The reverse will have the group of eagles like the modern AGEs not the same reverse as the original high relief. So no comparison. I wish it was an exact duplicate but it is not and that is a big disappointment.

No relationship between the two... separate markets. Cheers, RickO

They should be some sweet coins even though. I love the gold eagle obverse even though it is not quite the same as the old gold eagles. This will be a nice collectable. image

Not true according to the latest Coin World. Same reverse as 1908-1933 with IGWT motto around the sun.

Yes, you're right. The Coin World article confirms this.
