Will the new High Relief Saint Gaudens gold coin.....

Raise demand (and therefore prices) of its original counterparts, or decrease demand for the original ones because people can now obtain a reasonable substitute much cheaper?

There is no way it will look exactly the same.

The people that can buy the existing high relief material will do so, and so poor stiffs that can't afford those will get these and be happy.....
I don't think it will change demand for the originals.

Any idea are these going to be available in proof only or what?
since it doesn't seem likely I will have a nice real one any time soon
These will serve as a substitute for many that either choose not to or cannot afford an original.
They probably won't affect the prices of the originals since the buyers are different. It's not like these are going to have the same date and a date by itself is enough to justify a high price, even if everything else is exactly the same.
That said, I think the modern ones will fly out of the Mint as they will be priced only a little above bullion for a fabulously beautiful design. Think about it, an average grade of 69 and priced somewhere around $1100 - $1150 (a complete guess based upon today's bullion prices). What's not to like.
It may cause a minor uptick in the originals due to heightened awareness, but they have always been highly sought after and quite pricey given the relative rarity or lack thereof.
The antique look of the originals, would be tough to duplicate, IMHO.
I will still try to pick some up though.
I doubt the new coin will be a true copy of the original. They are already talking about chiseling detail. They will probably "refine" this and "strengthen" that. I will be pleasantly surprised if they bring back the Ultra High Relief as it was, in all its glory, but I am extremely skeptical.

<< <i>I wish it was an exact duplicate but it is not and that is a big disappointment. >>
If it was an exact duplicate, the date would be the same too
<< <i>The reverse will have the group of eagles like the modern AGEs not the same reverse as the original high relief. So no comparison. I wish it was an exact duplicate but it is not and that is a big disappointment. >>
Not true according to the latest Coin World. Same reverse as 1908-1933 with IGWT motto around the sun.

Yes, you're right. The Coin World article confirms this.
